Quite a few new pics, due to the forum's vacacions. I hope you enjoy them.

George Hatfield, from "The Shining".

An almost insolently beautiful boy.

For this last pic, I have more things to say. I think they are not strong enough to be spoilers (they may be mild spoilers), so I will not tag them, but I will leave this as warning, anyway. I will say things about George and Jack, so do not continue if you have not read "The Shining".

George is so perfect (besides his stutter), it is easy to see why Jack Torrance was so jealous of him. It was either jealousy or, as some have commented, an attraction Jack tried very hard to deny.

I can accept any or both, although I prefer to think it was plain jealousy. I think Jack saw himself as deserving of a place of honor, which was for the foreseeable future denied to him because of his past actions. His temper only made things worse, while everything seemed to go right for his student.

I do believe George himself was gay, though. And that he thought that was the reason for his teacher's hate. Suffering from that stutter and having to hide the fact he was gay may have made him blind to the fact that he was rather perfect, so he would not realize others could be jealous of him.

At any rate, I hope he managed to get into a good school after he was kicked off Stovington Prep.

Another pic from "The Dark Tower" ("Wizard and Glass"). I started it this week. I had started re-reading "The Stand" (and taking all the notes I needed for more fan art from that book, since I was missing them for many characters), but I was constantly called by this fourth Tower book. I paused "The Stand" right before Trash's introduction.

As for "Wizard and Glass", I liked reading Marsha's name at the beginning of the book. I loved all the beginning, and just reached the part where they leave Blaine. A new mention of Eddie Dean's newly gained muscle mass made me want to draw this, adding Jake Chambers for contrast (they are my current favorites in the series, at least until I get to read more stories with Roland's old friends). Jake has his longer hair for having spent a few days/weeks in Mid-World; time is weird here.

Just please forgive me for the badly drawn cloud in the background. I was trying a new way to draw them, but I messed up. I think I will get better at drawing clouds soon. And I also left out any battle marks the boys should have at the moment (I did not remember which of Jake's hands had the more obvious ones, for example). I do not know if they will heal completely or if they will leave scars, or if they would have the chance to show off their muscles later on in the book. If not, just assume any battle marks are present, just not displayed. :encouragement:

Ten or fifteen pounds of muscle.

By the way, the more I read the series, the more I wish they go for a young Eddie in the movies. If not 23, at least not my age (Aaron Paul is 37). Eddie's charm could easily turn into eye-rolling pathetic-ness if he keeps his dumb-jokes-at-the-worst-moments attitude as a man of almost 40. Unless they want to focus on the drugs part and leave the jokes out of the films, which would be rather sad.

Not saying we cannot still make jokes after 35, though. But Eddie's character would be different if moved from a 23 years olf boy to a 37 years old man.

From "Rose Red", Nick Hardaway.

Stephen King, Nick Hardaway.

Your illustrations of fictional characters are terrific but what surprises me the most is your illustration of Nick Hardaway... looks just like the actor! I don't know how you managed that using mostly simple line drawing. Have you ever studied drawing characturers?

Thanks, NBNP and Shannon.

I haven't studied it, and I am usually quite bad at likenesses.

It must be accentuated by my prosopagnosia. I am terrible at recognizing faces. I usually recognize people (actors included) by their hair, voice or the way they walk/move. If someone changes their hairstyle drastically, I am in trouble. Same if I see them away from the place where they usually are (if I associate them with a school, seeing them somewhere else throws me off balance). :D

That said, if people have very strong facial features, then I can more easily associate them to those. That is the case with Nick/Julian. First of all there is the nose. It is big and angular. Then there is the eyes/eyebrow combination, plus the way his glance looks. Those were important things, and then I just had to add the thin face and the receding, spiky hair.

All of those things helped me choose him as the first drawing from Rose Red, but I also chose him because he was my favorite. And not only because he was the best with his powers (less powerful than Carrie, I mean, Annie, but with more control), but also because he was the best at caring for others, and was smart and good with words. He even cared for Emery, even if he was clearly irritated by him.

I simply loved him in that series. When I grow up, I want to be as good at finding the right words at the right time as he is. :applause:

Something else about likenesses...

I have had to decline requests from friends and family to draw someone. Usually when they believe a few photographs are enough to draw them.

When I have had to draw people, I always ask either video material or the chance to observe them (in case I do not know them previously). I ask for real life situations, to see what they do in an ordinary day.

In the case of drawing characters from a play, I may know the actors, but I ask to see them in a rehearsal, since their job is to make the characters a different person from themselves.

I say this because the times I have been more successful in drawing a likeness have been when I try to draw their essence instead of their physical appearance. Of course, I stil try to get their looks right, but if I manage to capture their eyes, or their posture, or an expression, usually people love them.

I remember a case last year when I drew myself (or a character I portrayed in a play) for a poster. Some friends came to me later and told me they knew it was me just by looking at it. The funny thing is that the drawing had absolutely no specific physical features that should have told them it was me:

The face is just a circle. But something in the way he is standing (and perhaps my own expressionless face in real life) told them he was me. :D

Like the portrait of Dorian Grey.

Yes, I am sure he looked as physically beautiful in the painting as he did in "real life", but that was because his essence was completely captured in the canvas. His essence AND the love of the painter.

This is my feeling, too, when it comes to portrait painting or sketching people.

Unless you are working on the portrait of a very powerful king who will decapitate you if he does not like the painting.

Then just go with the most handsome features you can add, even if the physical looks or the essence of said king are not there at all.

That way, you may keep your life and a nice reward, and you will have made a king happy. :dispirited:
