I was looking at my Vudu account and I noticed I have far more Spielberg films than King films, I guess I'm a Spielberg addict.

What are your favorite Spielberg films?

Going n order mine would be...

1. E.T. (still is great today and doesn't feel too dated)
2. Jurassic Park (love it)
3. Jurassic Park: Lost World (close to being as good as the first)
4. Gremlins
5. Goonies
6. Jaws
7. Back To the Future 1-3
7. Jurassic Park 3
8. Close Encounters

I can't get into his more real world films, I've tried but no luck.

....I would agree with your ratings, but would flip Jaws above Gremlins.....

....and I the child of the late 60's and early 70's, understand the reasoning....

I saw the previews of Jaws when it was coming to Network TV for the first time, I think I was five at the time. The previews alone made me fear the beach for about a week, and we used to be total beach addicts back then. It didn't help that a dolphin swam up to me at Malibu beach and it died at my feet and had tons of shark bites. The lifeguards tried their best to save it but it was long gone, they said it was probably a tiger shark. In Wolffile, a werewolf book that has been out of print for eons, the good guy, with the curse, saves the day but then realizes he has to end his life before he loses his good side and he's like, "what predator can kill a werewolf". He realizes the great white shark is the most fearsome predator so he jumps off a cliff into the ocean where he gets torn apart by a great white.

Great book by a guy named Jack Woods (fake name I believe) but it came out in 88 and was out of print by 89. Used copies that are beat to hell go for cheap but I still haven't found a mint or near mint copy for cheap, sadly. I lost my copy eons ago but it would be all yellow and brittle by now anyways since it was kept in a hot storage room at my ex's.

I never could get into the Indi films, but I did try but I'm not exactly a huge Harrison Ford fan,. A lot of people love him from Star Wars, Blade Runner, Indi, etc, and so on while I was upset that Lucas made Luke the brother of Leia rather than the romantic interest.

I ilke all the Indiana Jones movies but Raiders is by far the best one, Harrison Ford is a good actor but I recently saw an interview with him and he was about as interesting as watching paint dry.

I was watching The Goonies. I watched it some time in the past, but couldn't remember it that well.

The thing about it is that it's a really cliché story - some kids forced to move because of money problems find a pirate treasure, that also some villains are after. You wonder how in the hands of Spielberg and Donner it still becomes a beloved classic. It seems a lot comes from the locations and camerawork. The port city that's used, Astoria, is real picturesque and the caverns that the kids and villains have to go through, filled with boobytraps and skeletons, to get to the ship, are relatively simple looking but it's shot in such a way with the right shadow and light patterns that it creates an exciting feel.

Also the kids are rather cliché. There is the fat kid that always thinks of eating, and the kid that's an inventor and creates James Bond like gadgets. Also there is the disfigured, but obviously gentle and innocent brother of the villains.
But rather than thinking you've seen it many times before, somehow Spielberg in the '80s succeeded to make it cinematic gold, that still works today. I think it comes from a genuine love for this kind of story Spielberg had. Despite all the cliché, it all feels like it has a heart, rather than something that's made purely for the money. There is a care for it, that you feel in every shot.

It's also funny to see in a film like this that people who are now familiar faces (Sean Astin, Josh Brolin, Corey Feldman, Robert Davi) go side by side with people that didn't have a big career after that (Jeff Cohen, Kerri Green, Jonathan Ke Quan).

The Goldbergs did an entire episode totally dedicated to the film and touched on everything that made people love it. For me personally, the locations played a huge role in the film, the Oregon coast is just beautiful. When I lived in Oregon briefly the girl I was seeing took me to where they filmed a lot of the movie and the restaurant, it was still there. All I know, if I was a kid living in that town and my family was close to losing everything and having to leave, I'd want to find a treasure map so I could be rich and stay. You kind of have to have money because the job market in that part of Oregon isn't exactly booming.

Gremlins was fun but they kind of tainted it with Gremlins 2. Sure, it was nice to know Billy and Gizmo lived happily ever after but the writing was just awful.
