Ok. I'm going to try and avoid gloom and doom here. I'm just somewhat perplexed by the casting news. Supposedly, they have already started principle photography for this project. We don't have Eddie Dean cast. We don't have Ms. Holmes cast. It is rather difficult for me to understand why we have two relatively minor characters (Sayre and Tirana) selected, but the heart and soul of the Ka-tet aren't even signed. I have a hard time understanding how this film can possibly make the listed release date with any degree of quality. Sayre and Tirana are characters that don't even appear until the last several books. This seems to imply they mean to do a single movie. I would really like to know the budget set aside for this thing versus the salaries of the the two listed leads, the Director, and the Producers. Analyzing this pragmatically, rather than as a fan of the book, puts up a lot of warning signs.

I can't say much other than it's possible those parts aren't necessary at this time but the others are. :zip_it: I'm still reserving judgement about whether it's a good or bad sign until I've actually seen the film.

Fair enough, but it is obvious why this is driving many of us up the wall. For my own part, Eddie Dean and Ms. Holmes are as important (if not more so) than Roland to my enjoyment. While I adore Jake, he isn't what kept me reading the series. I was spellbound when introduced to the Gunslinger's world by the literary approach and texture. I likewise came to dislike Roland by the end of the book even as I was captivated by his story. It was Eddie Dean and the Lady of Shadows who brought Roland back from the brink and into a context where we could like him again. It those two characters that shouldered much of the weight and interest in going forward. I'm not gloom and doom, but I can say without hesitation that a film that doesn't feature them isn't going to succeed.

*And lest there be any doubt, a film that puts it sole focus on a boy from our world who crosses over into another world to team up with an action hero who later comes back to ours has already been done (and to miserable effect). The film was called "Last Action Hero." I think it would be downright miserable to have a film using the same framework as that misbegotten vehicle. A boy and reluctant hero is cliche.

I'm not disagreeing with your points and it was The Drawing of the Three and the introduction of Eddie and Odetta/Susannah that kept me reading the series, but keep in mind that The Gunslinger did not have either of them in the book but Jake was.

True enough, and if I thought they were going in order and just doing the first book I wouldn't be concerned at all about the rest of the Ka-Tet. This starting in the middle and having black hats from the end, however, really disorients me. Don't worry though. I'm not trying to wheedle info, just kind of trying to make sense of the news. It gives me a headache. :D

That's a lot like reading The Gunslinger, though, isn't it? Trying to make sense of the story just confused me more.

I think you have the most exciting job in the universe. If we were in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, I'd be Slugworth whispering promises in your ear if you'll only bring me an Everlasting Gobstopper. Le sigh... I wasn't too excited about the movie until this.

Wilmington DE, strange little place.
HEY , for years (seroiusly years) Ive been asking " who ! is gonna utter the words :" The man on black fleed across the desert and the gunslinger followed " " , Id really like to know ho this is gonna be.

Im talking about a narrator, I think the story needs some narration., it SHOULD be someone.
it could be a charactor from the books, the man in black, BLAIN (little blain), Nigal the robot, Even Jack or
it be King himself could do it. It could be Patrick.

I have NOT given up on this movie yet, I think a black Roland could be...workable, but they have to
change some stuff... If thats ALLL they change...I could live with it. I have heard the the role of
'Tarana(what ever that is) is not NOT gonna be a big role at all. if it were...the'd have to change everything
and I would IGNORE the whole project forever.

I wanna see Drew Barrymore as Ally and Rosanna Barr as Sylvia Pittston
Elle Fanning could be Susanna of Mejis,

IM NOT GVING UP HOPE JUST YET

A few possibilities ie Eddie and Susannah are not in this movie or more probable - they haven't been cast yet or the studio is staggering casting announcements and is releasing such news at times or events they see best for generating buzz.
