I'm no contract lawyer, but I thought that once the movie company/television company buys the rights, they own it forever. The name of the story etc. That's why they could make 7 or so 'Children of the Corn' movies (I saw the director of the original said he owned the rights and was suiing someone over who owned the rights. It was in the news last month.)
Depends on the contract. Sometimes rights are sold in perpetuity, others for specific periods or instances.

The cast so far looks amazing! It is always great to have stars of past King works to come back to another work. Glenn, Spacek, Skaarsgard are great and it is good to see Lynskey too. She did a great job in Rose Red. I'm so ready for this series!

The only characters from King's novels who appear in the series are police - Alan Pangborn and Norris Ridgewick. There is mention of a very minor character from The Body, but he never appears. Everyone else is made up for the show.
