I really liked the way Cell started, from a peace filled sunshiny afternoon,to the mayhem Unca Steve created..and the evening, and the exit from Boston, liked it all,but somewhere along the way,I don't want to say it went stale,it just seemed to run down..for me anyway.Rate it as somewhere in the middle of the road of his books.

I loved Cell, read it in a few days, the movie should be out later this year I think. I have a trick for being interested in books which don't keep my attention, if the characters don't interest you try imagining them as other people, in Cell I think Stephen King describes Tom McCourt as being short with a mustache (right? That's how I remember him anyway) and that reminded me of Charlie Chaplin so for the whole book I was reading about Clay Riddel and Charlie Chaplin running away from and fighting zombies. It kept me very entertained. :)

Sad to read you did not like it.

It was my first Stephen King book and I really liked it. I also have been wanting to read it again. I am not sure if I will feel the shock of it after having read more-character-centric stories by him, but I doubt I will ever dislike it.

I also may have cared more about the characters since I like comic books, and having a main character who works on that grabbed me from the start. I also remember Jordan's name even years later. The first time I read one of Mr. King's smart kids who happen to save the day (I had seen them in movies and TV series, but, as I said, this was my first SK book).

Comparing it to The Stand (another post-apocalyptic story) and 'Salem's Lot (where the characters have to fight for their lives against a lot of monsters that outnumber them), I see these guys in Cell never had much of a chance to breathe. So what we see of their personalities and lives before the chaos is less than we do in those other books.

I'm about 70% complete and enjoying it very much. I'm not really sensing any impending doom to the main characters however. They just seem to be meandering North as opposed to a traditional "walking dead" type of zombies everywhere/impending doom stories.
More a kinder gentler zombie apocalypse.

Cell was great! I believe it was pre-smartphone. I am assuming, if it was a smartphone, the crackly emitting noise may have affected those close by, if on 'speaker'. I cannot remember if payphones or landlines caused the issue as well, but it would make sense. I saw half the movie (could not continue due to rancor) and a few months later decided to try and watch the whole thing. It was a bit better the second time.

I thought the film adaptation was one of the better ones
