Not sure if Jekyll and Hyde is the right 'tarot' card for The Shining (re: Danse Macabre's Tales of the Tarot). One might say it's a combo of The Werewolf and The Ghost (King's reluctant 4th card), but I wouldn't.
See, cause, unlike many, who claim Jack started normal and then became a monster, I think the guy was pretty messed up to begin with. Really noticed that during my last reading of Shining. He'd done some pretty monstrous things before he even 'walked on stage', so to speak. Even sober, he seemed a nervous, irritable, self-centered creep--close to some kind of melt down. The hotel just used what was already there, and pushed him over the edge.
(Ya'all can nay-say me all yez want, but I think ol Jack Nicholson captures this beautifully in the Kubrick flick.)
Go back and read it one more time and tell me wrong.
