Thank you so much everyone. I was in the middle of Walmart when my mom called me yesterday. Had to go find a secluded spot for a while.
My thoughts have been swirling, trying to find words to tell you what kind of man my Grandpa was. But none seem adequate.
He was always a very hard worker, had a very good size farm and working the land was what made him happy. When they retired and moved off the farm that was one of his life's trials, it was so hard for him to do.
He was always there for all of us, no matter what. Father to 4, Grandfather to 12, Great-Grandfather to 25 and Great-Great-Grandfather to 2. He helped Scott and I get established when we moved from home 10 years ago. The plan was for Scott to come first and we would join him when we could afford a place and my Grandpa didn't want that for us. So he helped us with our moving expenses and all of our deposits. He has helped all of us like that over the years and all without being asked to.
He loved sports. All sports. Was a really great bowler and used to go on national amateur tournaments. Brought home lots of trophies! That was a love he passed down and some of the most cherished photos are the ones with him at the front, with my uncles and a few cousins who did the team thing with him. He never got as loud as some of us do during Broncos games, (read: me and my Grandma!), his style was to lean back in his chair with a big grin and rub his hands together with glee. He loved to watch any kind of sports, but the Huskers, Broncos and Rockies and Nuggets games gave him much joy.
He loved animals. Cats on the farm, and he would teach them all to sit on his shoulders. Dogs too, he would sit in his chair watching a game and feeding the dog popcorn (much to my Grandma's chagrin) and when there was just a little left, let the dog finish off his can of Dr Pepper.
Always a gentle leader, he was a devout Christian and a Deacon at our church. He had a wonderful singing voice but was very modest about it. It was always something the congregation looked forward to, when it was his turn to do a special.
Married to my Grandma for 65 years, she will miss him most of all.
He didn't know us when we visited recently, not for the first hour. But then he did. I am so thankful we got to visit.
The funeral will be Monday, if everything can be arranged for that day. I will let you all know.
Thank you for being here for me and thank you to Spidey for starting this thread. I am not holding it together so well today but am glad to have you all to lean on. I hope I have given you a glimpse of the man I call Grandpa and love so very much. I will miss him dearly.
I want to post this song for him. Always his favorite Christmas song, he sang it at church every Christmastime.
