So guys, in the 80s I had Steve King and Clive Barker. I read tons of horror stories growing up and can name-check great writers like Robert McCammon, Dan Simmons, Peter Straub, James Herbert, Ramsey Campbell and Richard Laymon.

I still make time for King and Barker, but sadly don't have the time to explore other writers. For those of you keeping up, what good contemporary horror writers are out there? Give me suggestions, as I'd like to see what the young turks are doing these days. Feel free to talk about the types of stories they write too. Spoilers don't bother me, but use tags out of respect for the other forum members of course.

And if anybody suggests any of those "writers" of "young-adult" BS, I swear to the Crimson King that I will organise a one-way trip for you to Jerusalem's Lot.

Although I have only read the 1st book in the series, Justin Cronin is someone to watch. He had a bestseller with The Passage and the 2nd book in the series The Twelve also. A certain Stephen King had good things to say about his books. John Ajvide Lindqvist is another newer writer who has gained alot of followers. His first book 'Let Me In' is a modern classic! He's been called Sweden's answer to Stephen King. Scott Smith is another good writer (and another that Steve had good things to say about).

John Ajvide Lindqvist definitively. He should not be compared to king really because he is different but his books are good. Let The Right One In (perhaps shortened to Let me in in english), Handling the Undead, Harbour, Little Star are good. Cronins first The Passage i liked a lot but the second wasn't as good. One to check out is Jonathan Maberry. And an author named M. R. Carey wrote an excellent zombie novel called The Girl with all the Gifts. Truly first class and a new twist on the whole genre as a bonus. Will be interesting to see where that authot goes next. And i guess Joe Hill ought to be seen as new too. Another one to watch. Never really liked Scott smith, his characters to sketchy drawn so i didn't really care what happened to them but many like him.

Paul Tremblay has an excellent novel: A Head Full of Ghosts. There's Canadian writer, Nick Cutter. I like Sarah Pinborough's stuff, too. Christopher Golden.
Yeah, i am real curuious about Tremblays ghost. About Cutter... Read his the Troop and it was ok, no more, a lot of inspiration from many author but totally unoriginal in topic and tone though competently done. Is his number two better? Pinborough is interesting. Read Mayhem and Murder by her. Must check up who the heck C. Golden is, never heard of him.....

I've heard better things about Cutter's second book. I was a bit "meh" on The Troop. Pinborough's The Death House is a wonderful novel. Try Snowblind by Chris Golden (horror) or Tin Men (techno thriller).
