Not sure if there is another thread on this, but I ask for those who may know about this sort of thing: Is this something we should be concerned about? Obviously it is, but I mean, are we looking at a pandemic? Also curious why the previous SARS illness has no vaccine. Is the current pneumonia vaccine effective at all against this class of illness?

I haven't noticed another thread, but then I've been very much the part-timer just lately. So please feel free to post me a link someone, if I'm missing a thread.

From what I've seen Rrty it should very much be taken seriously. I suspect the virus will gain a foothold in most countries before too long. The important thing to remember for now though, is that it is no more dangerous than the typical influenza bugs. Which means, that yes it can be fatal to those with compromised immune systems, typically elderly people, the very young and the unwell.
It appears more communicable because there currently is no vaccine, but it doesn't (presently) seem to have a higher death rate than the influenza bugs that we see every winter season--so, lots of people will likely contract it and become very unwell, but unless a country is not equipped to handle high numbers of seriously unwell people, it (in theory) should not decimate large numbers of those populations.
Having said that, I would feel very worried for some nations, for example Samoa is still reeling from the terrible measles outbreak (likely started from New Zealand tourists  ) and would very likely not do well in the case of a huge outbreak of the Corona virus, they just do not have the resources. I suspect there are many countries that would be in a similar situation, so yes, it has the potential to be disastrous for many nations.

Hey Scott, what all is involved with a virus mutating from person to person contact to becoming airborne? Would that be possible for this virus?

I would think that person to person contact is easier to stay ahead of than airborne. If this thing mutates to airborne, it could get interesting. But then again, the CDC and USAMRIID I'm sure have all kinds of containment plans in case of escalation.

Some serious precautions are now being taken ing the US for the WuFlu... based on the actions being taken in China. And it’s going to cost us some big bucks. But…

If the WuFlu morphs into something closer to a worst-case scenario, nobody is going to regret taking every possible precaution. And even if it doesn’t, this is a good trial run for when something as seriously grave as Captain Trips breaks out.

Some of our flight companies (in Russia) also canceled flights to China. But it really does not make a lot of sense as there are many Russians in China as tourists, and many Chinese go here for business and holidays. So a lot of people are really freaked out here. The bad news is that they won't stop the virus from spreading in our country, they just check those who fly from China by taking their temperature, but they may not show any symptoms yet, so it is useless. The good news is that it is a virus, one of thousands, it cannot be treated with antibiotics or anything, the sickness usually takes 5 days and that's it. But sure it is dangerous for those who are not healthy, for children and elderly people.

...in a sense Shannon, it already IS airborne.....from what I understand it spreads by close contact and via respiratory droplets....so a sneeze or cough.....this has already affected more people than SARS and the like and standard pneumonia vaccines aren't going to be effective, hell-I read where they were using HIV anti-virals in China at one point to try to stem this sucker......keeping my fingers crossed it doesn't evolve into a pandemic....

I wasn't going to post because FlakeNoir already said everything I was going to say, but I just feel like adding my two cents

So, I have 2 types of chronic anxiety (diagnosed by a doctor) plus health problems. So coronavirus is really scary to me.

However, the media is blowing it way out of proportion. Yes, we should take it seriously. But most people who get it don't die from it. As FlakeNoir mentioned, it's basically like the flu, and the flu kills way more people in comparison (which isn't totally comforting to hear either, sorreh)

Unfortunately I succumb to mass hysteria very easily and I hate myself for it. But if you're a shaking ball of anxiety like me, try looking up the actual facts and don't go for that click-baity, fear mongering news articles

Yes it is scary and if you have an active imagination, you can imagine it evolving or all kinds of scary stuff. Just try to focus on the actual facts and distract yourself with other things.

Sorry I keep saying that, just want to help anyone feel a bit better if you're scared and alone like me

-EDIT- I also want to add, we have this type of thing happen from time to time. everyone panics, and then it calms down after a bit. The most recent one I remember is swine flu. My ex was convinced that it was going to be the apocalypse and we were all going to die. But yeah it kinda just came and went. Same with bird flu and stuff. Just something to keep in mind

I absolutely agree with you on everything you have said. I also think that it it good for someone to have this panic among people now, as a kind of distraction from some political matters, maybe. Some may say I am crazy to think like that :D And flu is really more dangerous than this virus, and flu is all around us. Stay safe, I hope we won't encounter either flu or the Chinese virus!

WolfgirlAwoo Thanks for that comment. I suffer major anxiety as well, particularly about infections/disease (wash my hands a lot, etc.). Your thoughts make me feel better. I obviously will continue to be careful, but will indeed try to distract myself, good advice...

For those who think of Captain Trips...I agree, that reference is appropriate here (in the sense of being King--related, not in describing accurately the situation as of yet), but I have more so thought of the short story "Gray Matter." There was a line in there about one of the characters being able to tell that the blob-creature could divide as a ways of reproducing (or maybe it was the narrator, can't recall without checking if it was first-person) and then performing the scary doubling-math. Because of some of the reported stats, "Matter" is more on my mind...

I feel you. Disease (especially unknown/incurable) is in my top 3 phobias. It's good to be careful, and no one knows the future, so I can't say I'm not worried at all. But at this point in time, with the current facts and state of things, I don't feel there is a reason to panic. I hope this all blows over soon!

It's certainly is a concern but as has been mentioned the media hype it up to ridiculous levels. Over two and a half million people died from pneumonia in 2017, was there screaming newspaper headlines plastered everywhere, nope. There were two hundred and sixteen million cases of maleria in 2018 with nearly half a million deaths, again there was no media blitz screaming this news out. Roughly twelve thousand people die falling down the stairs each year, are they going to find a cure for that. As the late great Douglas Adams said, "Don't Panic ".
