How sad. There was a high school kid who collapsed yesterday in Federal Way (WA), too. Maybe they should be a bit easier on these kids in the heat?

Most of these cases turn out to be a hidden heart defect but since you bring up heat, one thing that I've seen in some of these cases over the past few years is that supplements that are loaded with caffeine or other stimulants have contributed to some of these sudden deaths in the heat.

15 years ago (or so), the son of a friend of mine was diagnosed with a heart defect (a faulty valve I think - seems like it was backwards or something - I'm no GNT so we'll just have to say faulty valve). The kid was 12 or 13 and was playing in a football league and was at practice. He was having some bad fatigue issues. My friend realized something was really off with the kid and took him to the emergency room The kid was feeling better by the time they got to the emergency room but my frind insisted that he get checked out. They found this heart defect and did heart surgery on him a few days later. The doctor told my friend that he was really lucky. He said the kid could have suddenly dropped dead playing sports at some point. Once the surgery was done the kid was just fine. Scary stuff.
