Man, I devoured these books; The writing isn't great but the story more than makes up for that, i'd rank these books right up there with Harry Potter.

Loved the first 5 or so; not sure if there were more after that. I worked for the publisher at the time and I devoured them as they came out. I even like the movie.
ETA: looks like this guy has been busy over the years. In addition to 12 Saga of Darren Shan books as they are called now, he's written a lot of other stuff including books for adults.
Yeah, I think there are 11 or 12 Cirque Du Freak books, they got progressively darker as they went along, example: the last book had two characters (I won't say who for spoiler reasons) stabbing each other in the stomach at the same time with a graphic description of the knife pushing through intestines. Yeesh.
