I have always only been a reader of people's autobiography's the only story books i have read were back in my teens they were the first 3 Harry potter books i didn't read the 4th as i was not prepared to tackle all of the 636 pages it was double the pages of the 3rd book.

Anyway i'm now in my late 20's and tackled some big autobiography's most recently Arnold Schwarzeneggers autobiography which was 700 pages long. So i wanted to start reading stories and i have always fancied reading Stephen kings books i think i'm ready now.

i picked Carrie to read i am reading it on the kindle so i don't know how many pages it is but according to my research online it is only 200 pages seems a lot more than that on the kindle as it says the first chapter is just over 3 hours reading time and the second chapter is just over 4 hours reading time. Anyway i am just starting chapter 2 the prom night i have not seen the movie Carrie yet that's why i thought i would read it instead of reading a book where i have already seen the film i might avoid those books what do you think ?

...First-Welcome!.....Secondly, never avoid any of King's literary gifts just because you saw a movie....most will tell you that his writing far surpasses any adaptation.... he has penned some stinkers, but overall they smell of roses and unicorn farts compared to the wealth of craptastic film adaptations....

Carrie is 199 pages in hardcover; it is separated into three parts: 'Blood Sport', 'Prom Night', and 'Wreckage'. Great place to start, as it is his first and still retains so much of its power all these years later. :)
Strange seems a lot more on the kindle yes thats why i thought i would start with carrie as it is his 1st and a well knowing book. Anyway im into prom night now i should be finished it within the next few days just depends how tired i get as im back at work today after a while off so less hours to read now lol

Carrie always remains one of my most favourite of his novels and characters. Maybe it's that fairy tale aspect of it that I feel he has never managed (or wanted) to do again, a horror version of Cinderella. Even in the Disney live action film when Cinderella walks home alone after the ball, it's hard not to think about Carrie.

Even their names start with the same letter!

Welcome to the forum, and you are one of us now. I remember the first time I read Carrie, in one day, while at the lake. 25+ people camping together, I start reading Carrie right after breakfast, and people start going fishing. I look up and I'm all alone, so I keep reading, and by three pm the book is done. So good.

I have seen those, I actually preferred Stand By Me to The Body (the story it's based on) but think I'm in the minority there. I actually really like the IT mini series, it has a cheesy nostalgic feel to it, but the book is roughly 7 million times better than it. As for the Green Mile, it's one of my favourite films, and while I haven't read the book yet, I'm led to believe it is one of the closest adaptations of any of his works.

Another example of a great (in this case) TV show - 11/22/63. If you've seen this and like it (or even dislike it) and decide there is no point reading the book, then you've just done yourself out of a fantastic read.

Welcome to the king universe.

Hey, that's strange. In the Dutch edition the three parts don't have titles, just numbers. Did the parts always have titles since it was first published, or was this added in later editions?

Correct, it's close to the book, but still a lot is left out and still the book is better.

With King there is always so much AROUND the main story, so many side stories and side characters. The films always take the main story line, there doesn't really seem to be a way to do all those side stories, which is one reason why the films and books always feel quite different.

My hardcovers have the titles in them.

It's strange... Usually when a book is divided in parts they translate the titles of the parts, they don't leave them out entirely. Of course titles (of books, chapters etc.) can be difficult to translate, because they have a specific meaning, you can't always translate them literally like the text itself. But what they usually do is find a creative solution to that, find something that has a similar meaning in the translated language. They never leave them out entirely...
