Just started reading Lisey's Story. I am finding parts of it difficult to understand...that "over my head" feeling. I will continue to read it...just hope it becomes clearer soon. I just read "Blaze" and couldn't put it down. While I would be doing other things, I would keep thinking about Blaze and couldn't wait to get back to reading it. Was hoping Lisey's Story would be that way too.

I decided to get back to reading Lisey's Story and now I'm really into it. Glad I didn't give up! :)

Just finished Lisey's Story. It was a very sweet story...one I probably will never forget. Now on to Storm of the Century... :)

So glad you decided to give it another try, and even more so that you liked it.

To celebrate, have this pic I drew of villain/victim Gerd Allen Cole:

I say "victim" because I think he may have been lost to whatever it is inhabits Boo'ya Moon, too... :a17:

I have been finding it a difficult read and would go so far as to saying I didn't think I was enjoying it. I was put off a bit by some of the language used the kind of "private language" jokey stuff between them which was jarring on me and all the "bad gunky" malarkey.

However as he seems to always have the ability to do SK has drawn me into the story and I can start feeling myself getting caught up in thwe whole thing a lot more. I think this started around the time that

Lisey's sister has woken up and re-joined the world of the sane (in as much as any of us are.....)

I totally agree. I was actually bored in the very beginning. For whatever reason, their "private language" didn't bother me at all. As you said, SK drew me in slowly but surely. I actually love the book and think about it often. Even though I'm close to 50 years old, I don't know what love is. And I've been married twice! Maybe one day I will experience that special bond that so few people have.

But, but, ding dong! Ding dong for the freesias! (Right on with the art work Cesar) I think all the crazy talk makes this story. And like the sand worm on Tatooine that keeps it's victims alive while it digests them slowly (surprised nobody in the Star Wars universe bottles it's fluids and adapts them to some sort of longevity elixir) Cole got that eternal digestion treatment from old Pie-Bald Side....

Lisey's Story is definitely Mr. King's most 'literary' book. He does a lovely job with jumps back and for the through time, but since it's not part of his usual style, it can be difficult to navigate--it's unexpected. It feels raw and personal, too. It's an uncomfortable book, I think, but well worth the effort to read it through a first time. You'll finish and have to think about what you read, and then it will either click with you and be far easier the next time (my experience) or you'll decide it's not for you.

Yep. Lisey's Story is literary.
So are Bag of Bones and Duma Key.
And all three of them are wonderful.
And intense.
And not all SK fans can hack it.

All three novels are about loss on a level which you do not get over.
Or come to terms with.

If you get real lucky (or real unlucky, depending on your perspective), you too may be so close to someone that you have your own private language.
You may feel as if you (and that other person) have your own extra world.
You may bond with that person on a molecular level (or so it feels).
And when you lose them, that's it.
There is Before.
And there is After.

And you just deal with the hand you've been dealt.

This is one of my favorite SK books. I loved it from the first time I read it,and have read it 3 more times. I also have it on audio-book and listen to it quite frequently. I agree, this is one of his best literary works.

I am new here and this is my first posting. I started reading Lisey's story 24th of February and I am now on page 315 (62% read and 38% to go). Ok I am not native English speaking and needless to say that I struggled initially. This is an understatement and I had many doubts whether I should read it. I have been spending many many hours reading, listening to the audio and posting too many questions on word reference forum. I found the language hard. Too many unfamilair words and expressions.
Nevertheless, I persevered and I am pleased I did. I am enjoying it thoroughly. I am no longer in hurry to finish it. Actually I started to marvel Stephen's style and his rich command. I will be scavenging through this website, not knowing what to expect and I will be posting some nagging questions.
Once again, hi all. I am pleased I found this website. This is my 5th book by SK. SK and Lee Child are definitely my favourite authors.
