My son gave me "On Writing" as a Christmas gift. I just read page 163 three times. I can't believe that you actually confirmed my "crazy" premise. Stories make themselves. I tell everyone, who asks how I create plots and characters, the same in other terms. I tell them that the story writes itself and the characters create themselves as I write. I have never outlined, plotted or (God forbid) decided the ending before I began. Yes, there are writers who actually do that. Thank you for letting me know that I'm, at least, no more crazy than Stephen King. P.S./ I'm digging up my next fossil - a crazed and perverted private eye who hunts down undocumented immigrants for bounty. Paul. Paul Holl-photo-2d.jpg

Thanks Tery. I'm loving "On Writing" and can't believe how similarity we think and write. Busy here in PA experiencing my latest story write itself...always surprised by the fossils I find.

As soon as I reached page 163 my eyes lit up and my soul burned with excitement at the thought of sharing my work with Steve so I went to work regardless of it being 3am and me being ready for bed I typed away and here we are now... To my disappointment I realized he isn't accepting the exercise anymore, In hindsight it would have been wise to check the website first because I can't help but feel like I wasted my time where as I could have been putting it into my novel. Oh well, like the rolling stones said, you can't always get what you want and so on. If anyone wants to share the plot symphonies and how theirs turned out or any thoughts on writing I'm open to it. Just wish I could at least upload the word document on here and see what you guys think since I haven't sent any of my writing anywhere yet and would have loved to hear some feedback. Sounds like a fascinating fossil you've got Hollaw! Cheers from Canada

Hi Devin. No writing exercise is a waste of time. We don't allow any creative writings to be posted directly to the site (unless they are authorized group writings for special things like Halloween) , but if you have a blog, you can post it to your blog and then post the link to your blog in our Self Promotion area.

On the best of writing days, it feels like taking dictation, right? No thought about 'what is going to happen'--it just happens, and you try to get it all down without cocking it up by thinking. I love those days.

Thanks for clearing it up Dana! Can't agree more Moselyn, maybe it wasn't such a bad day after all. If only there were more days like that but then we wouldn't be able to appreciate them enough.

Welcome to the SKMB! Keep posting! My limited experience with writing anything, essays, fiction, has shown that once I get the idea what the writing is going to be about what I'm writing writes itself. It's truly magical and wonderful.

Welcome to the SKMB! Keep posting! I'd love to read what you wrote. Like us to a blog. Maybe you can somehow include your story or parts of it in your other current undertaking.

Thanks! Appreciate your interest! I'll work on finding or creating a blog after my afternoon routine. Including parts into my current composition is genius and never crossed my mind until now. Most obliged by your thoughtfulness!

You're welcome. I've read at least two novels which include entire built-in other stories. I find that very interesting.
