I loved this story.. just the fact of being lost in a place that seems to go on and on and on, it seems like hell.. and especially when the lovecraftian monsters start appearing, or do they, is it just a suggestion that they are there.. what a horrible situation to find yourself in, and of course no evidence to find your partner.. creepy story..

Update! I finished :) was really good but man I could have used a lot longer story! Was so good. Wish it had explained a little more but more spooky to keep the mystery

Yeah, it's a spooky one, for sure!

....I got the same feeling of "disconnect" with this homage, as I did from Lovecraft and that's high praise.....not many can produce that creep factor without really revealing anything.....
This story has always reminded me of Joseph Payne Brennan's "Canavan's Backyard" easy to find in horror anthologies or kindle, great short horror story as well..don't know about anyone else, but sometimes I have nightmares of walking,or climbing,or whatever, for miles and miles, and not being able to get where I want to go..this story is good along with SK's..

Oh, yes. That's a common "anxiety about where I'm going in life" dream. It's always disorienting when you wake up, at least for me.
I can't say it's disorienting when I wake up, I pretty quickly get my bearings.. but it is pretty anxious while I'm dreaming, I know I've had dreams like that where it's speeds my heart up and anxious then.. kind of like I know I'm dreaming but the anxiety still gets me going, like for whatever reason climbing on a mountainside and getting stuck in a spot where you can't go up or go down.. another one is being in a huge noisy filthy factory, not just a big one but like the size of a state or something, giant like that, it's staffed by unseen scary beings, and trying to avoid them and find the way out.. I don't get that one too often but it's a scary nightmare..

Oh I love when King does his Lovecraft homages. Wish he'd write more stories like this one. Wasn't it made into a film in the Nightmares & Dreamscapes collection? I have the DVD set; must go look it up again.
I hadn't seen the adaptation of this one! I'm going to look it up as soon as possible. How well does it portray the visual transformations of the town?
