The Lottery is one of the great american short stories!!
And Shirley Jackson is way to unknown IMO. She ought to be mentioned among the great american creepy stories writers like, Poe, Lovecraft and a few more.
And her novels are good too. The Haunting of Hill House is the best Haunted House novel ever written. Even if i adore King i must admit that Hill House is better than The Shining.. And The Sundial and We have Always Lived In the Castle are very good too. She is a master in building atmosphere with simple means, one of the reasons that the Lottery is such an effective little story. Not an unnecessary word. (Yes, there are some adverbs there that King disapprove of but we all have our style)
