....my usual brief note....loved it!....was like reading a Twilight Zone episode....he is truly a good'un.....
True to form, Joe presents a scary and creepy story. There is something about basements.
From what I have read on line, Joe had an alternate ending, which has been deleted from his blog.
I'd like to know more about the sister-- her"powers". And,who(m) was it at the other end of the phone!

Al's brother didn't seem to be too surprised or disturbed that there was a kidnapped boy in the basement.
I liked this story. The clown reminded me of John Wayne Gacy.
Balloons-- black ones described as the color of sealskin that made Johnny think of poisoned grapes. That made me shutter!
One thing I'm finding as I read stories from 20th Century Ghosts is Hill consistently delivers surprising endings, even twist endings. One of my favorite endings, besides the one in "New Modern Horror" (I think that's the title), is from "My Father's Mask". I still have about five stories left, plus the novella.

Sure. How about "In the Rundown".
....he writes short tales like these which echo the old pre-censorship horror comics....
That's the perfect comparison. He really does. And Twilight Zone-ish, too, like you said.

This story is very creepy as a parent. So quick these kinds of things happen!
I loved the line about the popcorn shaped concrete....perfect, I could see that in my head.
Another knock it out of the park story by Joe. Suspenseful, scary and ultimately satisfying ending. Good prevails!!

Going to call it a night. Thank you cat in a bag -- enjoyed this short story. Joe always hits that scare factor.
