....my schedule is always uncertain on Wednesday, so allow me to comment a bit early....this is not Lovecraft at his best....I have been a fan for years and knew the tale long ago....time hasn't changed my mind.....he crammed every overly descriptive wording and phrase into this and flung it at our imagination and hoped it would stick....his tropes were poorly handled.....his leviathan cosmology and those "from outside space" were given much better treatment in other stories....Panda?....I'm not pooping on your suggestion, just saying that this black slime could have been smeared better elsewhere by Howard Phillips....the maestro of dark atmosphere missed the mark on this one....

Ditto on what you said so perfectly.
I have never been a Lovecraft fan. I give him mad props for being a pioneer of Weird Fiction, but as far as I can remember, I have never read anything I particularly liked of his.
I also find it interesting and very cool that the ladies that contributed to this thread enjoyed this read and Lovecraft. Most women I know don't care for him at all, but the men do. Sort of like men (in general) love The Three Stooges and most women don't. But, I loved that you girls appreciated him in a way I can't.
I have a book of his short stories and I hope to read it and develop a little better appreciation for a writer that so many admire.
