I think it's impressive the amount of tension that Elmore packed into just a few pages. This story had an ominous feel about it right from the start.
Yeah, so much is revealed through dialogue, which allows the story to chug along. I liked how smart Kidd was and how he got in Scallen's head. I agree with everyone that Scallen was a noble man and he was fulfilling his duty to law enforcement. I haven't read Elmore Leonard before but I'm familiar with most of his books. I know he is famous for his natural, snappy dialogue and realistic and brutal depictions of crime. He's funny, too. This was an exciting story with plenty of action and tension.

Hello friends! I'm late- cry yer pardon, but here finally!
I love Westerns but have never read any. Excellent choice for the story, fljoe0 !
I enjoyed this story - it felt so familiar to me! So sublime that we all felt Roland - being true - not forgetting the face of your father! I was so relieved Scallen remained true - dying honorably would be so much better than taking a bribe and letting a bad guy walk.

And also: Tarantino. As I was reading it, I said to the Ogre "I get the feeling this is going to go all "Reservoir Dogs" soon." It so totally evoked the same kind of feeling I get while watching a QT movie. Think of Butch and Marcellus Wallace in Pulp Fiction - thug enemies doing the right thing! I was a little wrong about how it would go down - I had in my head an entirely different outcome. But it did not disappoint. I even got another Dark Tower vibe when he described the train as a Grotesque Grasshopper. All of the gun speak went right over my head. Dana Jean I too spent a lot of TV with my dad watching Westerns and war movies. They are my "comfort movies" now. Thank you for the story flojoe!

I enjoyed this story very much. First Elmore Leonard for me as well. I have seen the movie remake with Russell Crowe but not the original, but it has been a long time.

I too grew up watching westerns with my dad! Clint Eastwood, Bonanza, those kinds of things. But only other western I think I have ever read is Lonesome Dove and the prequel and sequel. I do enjoy the genre, should look for more.
