I did not see the Derby live but the crazy ending to this year's race just seemed too....not haha funny, but kinda funny in the way coincidences are funny. Definitely bizarre and it just kept this story fresh in my mind all weekend.
what exactly is the crazy ending? I know someone was DQ'd. I didn't pay attention. Life got in my way.

The winning horse was first declared the winner then disqualified. They said he disturbed the stride of some of the other horses which gave him advantage.

I don't follow horse racing so to me the clip where this is happening is as clear as mud.

I just thought it was kind of a funny way to have it go down. I cannot imagine all the angry people who bet, thought they won, then had it snatched away. Just thought it highlighted our little story in a "Decadent and Depraved" kind of way. I think Mr. Thompson could have written a heck of a follow up using this year's Derby.

did not watch race, but saw video. They show a line he should not have crossed. Jockey said horse did "stray". Not a fan of horse racing. Looked to me they were all on top of each other. Personal opinion, horse racing not a good sport.:onthego:

I would be hanging onto my betting ticket for a while. Sounds like years of lawsuits. bwhahahah!

here is explanation and video

It sounds like the horse did what horses do. It shifted legs coming out of the corner and when you shift a leg, your weight is gonna move to that shift. And apparently shifting legs is standard when they come to the straightaway. All the horses would've shifted their weight to the outside leg as they hit the straightaway, so he is penalized because he is a better athlete and able to shift sooner?

Like I said, I don;t do horse racing and and never knew horses had to stay in lanes. I understand with human runners, but a horse is a horse, of course! Uggg.

Owner did challenge, but was denied. Rules??

I'd be the a-hole arguing this. An animal doesn't follow rules, and a jockey can only do so much with an animal -- albeit well trained animals -- but still animals that are going to do what feels right to them in their stride.

And while they train and train and train -- there are going to be exceptions to that training from time to time.

ALWAYS hang on to your betting slips until the race is ruled official. (That's for all betting, including lotteries).

DQs are not that uncommon in general but in a huge race like this, it's very rare. Objections happen in horse racing quite a bit. If the racing officials decide that a foul happened, they don't necessarily DQ a jockey either. Sometimes they may change the finish order (like move a first place horse to third). It's a horrible thing when you are holding what you think is a winning ticket and you see the objection light flashing on the tote board. :)

I love horse racing but like a couple of other sports that I like, I'm conflicted. I enjoy watching these magnificent horses racing and I really do think that the horses love to race but there's the other side of things. The horses that are good and race at the major tracks and in the major events are well cared for but the problem is process of getting to that place. Many animals that aren't good enough are mistreated. It's kind of like boxing. I love it but I know I shouldn't.

I think this story was a commentary about America in the 1960's because he brings up stuff like the Kent State University shootings etc. But basically the narrator says he's just like everyone else. You know he's a bit screwy from the the start when he says he's bought some 'Chemical Bill' mace spray. I've been to race meetings and you see guys and girls get drunk. I really enjoyed that story, I had never read it before.
