I enjoyed reading that again (and watching the movie).

To me, the story is about human nature and how people can turn on each other in extreme situations. That's a theme that is in many SK stories but in The Mist with most of the story taking place in a confined space, the nastiness seems more intense. The Mist is a story about monsters but the humans are almost as scary.

Agree abut the humans and their reactions being scary.

I think I told the story before in some thread
Many years ago while driving home from work one afternoon, I had the cassette tape of The Mist playing. NO AC in car at the time, and widows where down. Long stop at traffic light and a state trooper pulls up along side. The tape is at the part of screaming and shouts in the store. Yes, the volume was up. The look I received was priceless. I though for sure I;d be pulled over. Instead , as the light changed, the trooper yelled out-- Must be Stephen King!!

I watched the movie after I read the story and on the blu-ray there is a conversation with Stephen and Frank about the ending (of the movie). Steve liked that Frank had come up with an ending because he didn't feel that his story had a proper ending. With the ending of the movie being so bleak and studios not liking bleak endings, Steve asked Frank how he got the studio to go along with it and Frank said that he had to promise to keep the budget low. The studio wouldn't allow that ending with a high budget. Frank said they shot the movie in 60 days and had no frills.
