I had an incredible oportunity thanks to Warner Bros Argentina. I was invited to the Red Carpet in LA, where I met some of the actors and actresses, watched the film with them and attended an after party where I had the chance of talking with Mike Flanagan (who I congratulated for two AWESOME Stephen King adaptations). October was, by far, the best month I had in years. I saw Stephen King and Joe Hill live in Boston and then traveled back to Los Angeles for Doctor Sleep.

Here are some pics of the events. :)

I haven't watched the original Shining in eons but I have to see Doctor Sleep, it looks better than Shining. I haven't read the book yet though and I would prefer to read the book first. However, since I'm someone who waits until films are on cable or blu ray, I still have time, I guess. I imagine Doctor Sleep won't be released on home media until February.

I loved the movie. I thought Mike Flanagan did a stellar job straddling that line between sequel to the Kubrick film and sequel to the novel. I understand a lot of peeps poo-poo'd the idea of having any relevance to the Kubrick film, since Doctor Sleep was written as a sequel to The Shining novel, but let's be real. A lot of the movie-going audience that would be seeing this film are more familiar with the Kubrick film than they are with the book. It's a sad fact, but almost everyone I saw this with only have seen the film version of The Shining. I appreciate that Flanagan approached the film with this in mind, and did a wonderful job without muddling the essence of what he was adapting. It still felt like the spiritual sequel to the novel of The Shining. And I'm honestly amazed with some of the things they got away with for such a wide released movie, regardless of it bombing. That third act is something else. haha.

I absolutely loved the movie. Luckily, I had a chance to watch it in the original in a theater, that is a very rare opportunity in my country, usually all movies are translated and I usually hate the translation as they make so many stupid mistakes... Anyway, this one I watched in English and I enjoyed it. I liked the actors, visual effects - everything is great in the movie. A big joy for The Shinning fan. Definitely gonna watch it again some time.

I saw the movie on its opening weekend, and I loved it. I was worried about how they'd "marry" the book to the Kubrick movie because of the death in the movie of a major/minor character, but they handled it fine. I will say I didn't much care for the ending....it was poignant, but considering how much they changed Abra and her family, I can see they pretty much had to in order to tie everything up into a tidy little package. Plus, since so much backstory about partying Jack was left out of the movie, it would have been confusing anyway. It would have been nice to see the kiss goodbye at the end of the last battle, but a greeting with a hug makes a nice substitute.

Loved the movie, (for the most part) as well, but also didn't care for the ending. Never quite understood why screenwriters/directors feel the need to make those kinds of changes to the endings when they've been perfectly content to keep so many other aspects of a novel mostly intact... I guess it's to provide a measure of surprise for people who've read the book, so they don't know what to expect at the finale, but still... why "fix it" when it ain't broke? :-(

IMHO this was one of the best and most loyal adaptations of a King novel, even with the inclusion/adaptation needed to elements from the film version of "The Shining". Tying in to Kubrick's film was obviously a "commercial" necessity, given how popular and even iconic that movie was, and I thought Flanagan handled that brilliantly. Ewan McGregor and Rebecca Ferguson were outstanding. It's a shame this movie didn't do better than it did at the box office.

i bought the blu-ray with the directors cut. I prefer it to the theatrical release. And I still prefer the book to the movie, however... I LOVE THIS MOVIE.
My husband, extremely picky when it comes to thrillers, watched the whole thing without falling asleep--that in and of itself is amazing. He enjoyed it.
