I just finished Duma. LOVED it. Just one question, how did those paintings left at the gallery get defused? If Edgar was able to paint and affect Duma from afar after defeating Perse, then those paintings still must hold some dark power as well, no? Thoughts, please.

...even though Edgar's painting prowess was being guided at times by Perse, and yes, those were dark images-I always felt that his gift came from the traumatic brain injury....thereby, he poured a little of his true self into every piece that he did, and once the demoness got her "drink"...those images may have had vestigial evil, but nothing active...

I guess I thought that the "power" part came from Perse -- that his artistic ability was there, but the supernatural part came from her...I kept expecting Edgar and Wireman would find a way to torch the gallery and pay for the rebuild or they would orchestrate a way for the paintings to be "lost" in shipping to the new owners. I also wish I could've seen the visions Perse sent Mary Ire, because that must've been intense.

Mary Ire was such a well drawn character, no pun intended. She reminded me of Miriam from The Dark Half, I don't know why exactly. They both were older, sexy, and strong-willed women.
Now that I think about it, they were both killed because of their closeness to the correlating protagonist. George killed Miriam because she and her husband had influenced Thad's decision to "bury the pseudonym" and also because killing her would hurt Thad. In Duma Key, Perse causes Mary Ire to commit suicide after doing its bidding. I think she was killed because, among other deaths, it hurt Edgar.
Maybe when I reread The Dark Half it'll come to me.
