i'm currently re-reading It, and i was reminded of all the really overt gay-coding for eddie. i went to look for a thread about it here on the skmb, but i didn't see one, so i'm making one.

anyone up for a really intense analysis of eddie's sexuality and/or discussion of why stephen king has never said anything about it (to my knowledge)?

i'm having an overload of emotions over eddie right now and i'm raring to talk about him.... hit me up!!

You're right, however, I do feel it isn't quite the same as being in love. I believe it is some kind of strong, heavy admiration, and yes, a very deep love too. But in a different (and much deeper?) way than being in love with him. I'm not trying to dismiss your point by any means; this is just what I always thought it was. :smile-new:

True! It's quite possible that Eddie is gay at heart.
i just feel like some of the decisions stephen makes (the parallels with adrian mellon, the particulars of his marriage, his fears- in both the book and the mini series-) are too deliberate for eddie's feelings to be completely covered by the general kind of love the seven feel for each other. i think that stephen king did most of these things deliberately, just like how stan is coded for OCD: it's never explicitly stated, but heavily implied.

...as a man, I can feel a strong love for another man and yet have no interest in a gay relationship.....
okay, but that doesn't mean that eddie is necessarily straight. why, if he's straight, does he marry a woman he knows full well is the spitting image of his mother? why does he hate having sex with her and get uncomfortable when it's brought up in derry? why does he seem ashamed by it? why, when mike describes adrian mellon, a short gay asthmatic, does everyone look to eddie and eddie takes a puff off his inhaler? why does his worst fear as a child, the leper, sexually harass him? in the movie, he's just a gross sick guy, but he's not in the book. again, i'm not saying every single thing eddie says or does points to him being gay, but i think there's a lot of evidence pointing toward King intending him to be.

....no argument here dear heart....simply stating my opinion.....I don't have any less affection for the character one way or another....

I don’t necessarily think Eddie’s gay, you gotta think about the fact that he lived with an oppressive mother who probably spun to him all her beliefs on STDs and such, this can be seen in how the Leper represents the idea of a disease being transmitted through sexual acts as the leper offers to molest him for a dime. This doesn’t completely say that he’s not gay but I don’t think he really is, maybe bisexual if anything. If there’s one character that might be gay it would be Adrian Mellon, but that’s probably just speculation right there.

I would argue that it doesn't make him "gay-coded" (new one to me) either.
Why does he marry a women like this mother? Many people in real life marry a mother or father copy.
Why do they look at Eddie after describing Adrian as a short, gay asthmatic? He's asthmatic.
If you read Eddie as "gay-coded", ok, no problem! I don't read it that way, but that's why we are all different!
