skimom2 From everything that I can see, from Reddit to Yahoo groups White Privilege is the buzzword, with, as I said, Uncle Tom coming in a distant second. And the definition of Uncle Tom is a gross perversion of Stowe's Civil War message and completely unacceptable. I refuse to use it without explaining this.

Making a movie for an audience who doesn't know or care who Stephen King is or what his concepts mean is a complete waste of time and doomed to failure from the outset.... (after you offer your response, if you want to do so, I'll then let this drop, at some point this also becomes a waste of time... we never stop thinking, never stop offering answers and the next questions.)

The worst part about all of this is the time that will be needed to pass before anyone worthy will even touch this with a ten foot pole.

Hi!

Um haven't posted here but I was reading through the thread and as someone who is a younger fan of King probably compared to most here, not that King doesn't have many younger fans but haven't seen many as young as me on this board.

As someone who is black and white technically (my dad is black and my mom is white) I don't really care that Roland is black and I think Elba will do fine....lets give the guy a chance. I mean would I prefer a more straight adaptation? Sure but as someone who has read books, comics and written most of his life you just gotta learn to accept that adaptations are mostly gonna be different.

Most of all for something as vast, confusing, weird and strange as the DT series you can't expect a straight adaptation. I mean its okay to be a little put off by changes but you really have to learn to condition yourself with this sorta stuff, not get so worked up and enjoy the adaptation on its own merits. I admit most of my favorite movies are more original pieces but as I said I'm a comic fan (mostly Image these days but I still love Marvel and DC)....none of the comic moves are EXACT adaptations but a lot of them are really wonderful.

Worst case scenario the movie is bad but people like the concepts enough to check out the books. The books will still be there undamaged and unchanged for people to enjoy for long after we are dust and bone, if the movie is THAT bad it will fade away likely. Best case scenario its a really amazing film with its own spin on the journey, it makes people read the books more and it makes The Dark Tower go mainstream more so then semi-popular level its at. I mean its really starting to explode more it seems then ever before, not to say it wasn't popular but there are levels of being well known. I know I might not sound like a true MEGA FAN of DT but trust me its by FAR my second fav fantasy series ever and I'd of LOVED a normal adaptation but this is also fun and might be better to a degree....most of all if the movie/tv series or whatever they are doing is really great in terms of quality.

Cause its a continuation somehow from what I hear and that's really neat never before done really!

In fact even though they all seem to take place on different levels of the Tower you could technically read the prequel comics from Marvel, then the books and round it out by watching the live action sequences (if The Dark Tower film is good enough to span all that's planned) as the finish and with that you really get a fitting epic for something that spans many worlds and multiple timelines because it would then span three great mediums all about the same quest all connected.

Let's just wait and see :D

They are doing some interesting things and if pulled off right could be a very interesting shake up.

A lot of you have been reading King since before I was born and I get the hostility/worry but be calm it will be A-OKAY! and if its not keep on smiling cause we still have the books! :D

For the record the books are very close to my heart and one of the last things me and my uncle (who was more like my father then my father ever was) bonded over before he was killed in a car crash and SK has been one of the many authors that really have influenced by own writing.

But I try to be chill and optimistic about most things cause you'll run yourself up a wall (or up a tower in this case? :p) gettin to upset about these things.

I don't care as much about the casting of Elba as I do his wardrobe. What the frack! Useless steampunk buckles and that lame long duster (which Roland never wore in the books), and them itty bitty six shooters. Did the creators even READ the material?

God, why couldn't Darabont have done this'n?

Ah hell, might as well wait and see. But I predict just more lame shakey camera fx, nauseating cgi, and some lame whiney chick giving her anemic version of Hey Jude...if Hey Jude even makes it into the film. More'n likely just another sneaker ad.

Yippee.

lol....

Spoilers here kinda ...(but I figure everyone knows pretty much) also I HIGHLY HIGHLY doubt anything like this will happen but say the first Dark Tower movie figuring its good and does well (fingers crossed) and then IT comes out later that year.

What if at the end of IT, one of Pennywise's eggs (I think start that's mentioned in IT the book....forgive me its been a loooong time since I read it) starts to hatch or they at least show or imply the eggs and they heavily suggest one of them is Dandello whenever he shows in the Dark Tower films as well?

Or something like that.

Maybe not so on the nose (they dont have to be related by blood the two creatures) but something very subtle that really notes that Pennywise and Dandello cut from the same cloth and it also play up the connections a bit. Don't wanna get to Marvel Cinematic Universe with it but doing that stuff in a very stealth way would be pretty groovy.

Appreciate you passing on those news reports not_nadine but that's old news - was reported back on July 21 at SDCC with Anthony Breznican from EW. Given the timing of the event it's understandable that most media outlets were too busy to check out all the reports coming out of SDCC.

Elba confirms shooting done around the 3:00 minute mark.

Idris Elba reveals the accent Roland the Gunslinger will have in The Dark Tower

Great interview!

I would say fast forward to about 3:50 unless you want to hear about his other projects as well

I'm not sure whether there are rules about quoting a person into a different thread. I know how to do it....I just think it can be improper. So although my comment is in reference to a person's post in another thread, I'm answering here.

In the thread you have forgotten the face of your father someone mentioned both Clint and Idris are good looking.

I don't actually agree about Clint. I wouldn't call him ugly, but not someone I would have ever called cute, handsome, or sexy. Like Roland. I never imagined him as good looking or sexy.

Idris on the other hand...cute, handsome, and extremely sexy.

Hmmm

Roland?

I don't believe Roland is a very attractive man. I think he probably was when he younger, but he's long passed that point when see him in the book. He's older, he's been in battles, through the elements for years, hasn't been eating properly, he's sick and so on.

He was put through the grinder.

Whatever attractiveness is.

It's his presence, and quiet mysterious knowledge. I'll take that anyday over a pretty face.

Very true.

There is a lot more to attractiveness then looks, but I'd suggest it would probably be in everyone's best interests to avoid any long form contact with Roland Deschain. For both physical and mental safety concerns.

I was initially disappointed when I found out that Sai Elba was cast as Roland. I'm African American and a loyal SK and DT fan. I've always pictured Childe Roland as an Eastwood type with pale blue bombardier eyes.

I've had time to commiserate about the casting and I'm a little more optimistic about the project.

since this adaptation is going to be a sequel, the director has more leeway with the story. Maybe Roland changes a little everytime he completes a time loop. Mayhaps he picks up the darn Horn of Eld this time and ends the loop.

To all my fans of The Shawshank Redemption....Red was written as a white character and Andy Dufresne was supposed to be fat and dumpy.... Shawshank ended up great. In fact it's considered by many to be one of the greatest movies ever. I hope that they nail the casting for Susannah Dean....her character is incredibly complex and it's going to take an exceptional actress to pull off the multiple personalities.....and the rape scene from the third book.

I'm more concerned with the rating of this movie. I hope that it's going to be rated R, so the film will be just as gritty as the books.

To all those saying that you will boycott the film because of Sai Elba.....give it a shot first (pun intended). My expectations has fallen for this movie some, but I'm an optimist by nature. I've waited years for this movie.....and I wouldn't miss it for all the graf in Mid-World.

Welcome! And good thoughts there. I'm giving it a shot. Until I see it...who knows? Maybe it will be great!
