....so I started my read last night, as Tracy had bought me a first edition as a gift....so far I'm enjoying it-even with the not so subtle political under/overtones.....

That's why I'm waiting for one evening when I'm 3 sheets to the wind to read it. Now I just have to figure out where it is... I think a sofa might have swallowed it.

Thank you Spideyman. Of course volume is not what makes or breaks a book. It's just... with Elevation, it ended where i felt the story was finally about to pick up.

I love pretty much all Stephen King books, and his short stories are amazing (Herman Wouk is still alive is my #1). But Elevation is neither here nor there. The writing is brilliant, the story is lukewarm... so sorry to say that! Loved DeeDee, very colourful.

I'm getting The Outsider next!
...welcome!....

'though I did love Elevation, I have one complaint;
Story was uplifting but an epic tale it ain't.
All it did was wet my whistle; leave me wanting more...
When's a lengthy Stephen King book coming to the store?

I know that I sound ungrateful. I apologize
And I will admit the novel helped my spirits rise.
Please forgive me for displaying such unseemly greed
But I really wish the book had been a longer read.

Hi Kadebg and MrsSmeej! Interesting points (and presentation MrsSmeej :D). Out of curiosity, If Elevation were framed as a short story rather than novel would you have approached your reading/critique differently? In other words, do you think your reading of Elevation might have changed had it been packaged as part of a short story collection or maybe even a Kindle Single? Totally a silly hypothetical question, but I'm fascinated by how genre influences perception of a work.

....I'm happy to have a new release from our main Inkslinger, but I have to say that the story would have been better served as part of a new collection, than a stand alone piece....

Agreed! I absolutely loved the work, but I could definitely have seen it fitting in with a collection in the style of Full Dark, No Stars or Different Seasons.

Are the bad reviews justified for Elevation?

I got this for Christmas & hoping to get onto it soon but surely it can't be 'that' bad?!!

Each reader must decide for themselves the worth of reading a book. From what I gather, most feel it was an issue of calling it a "novel" . Personally, I enjoyed the story. Read it, and judge for yourself.

I was pretty dissapointed with this one I'm sad to say. I was hoping to read a great fast paced story and instead got several hundred pages of a political lecture disguised as a story. Felt like he pulled a fast one there. Oh well, that's one of the first times I've felt that way upon reading a SK book, so there's always next time.

Stupid me, but I didn’t realize how small the book would be when it was delivered. We all have been too accustomed to thick books that we either pick up at the local independent bookstore or when we open the online package. I didn’t read it right away. I wanted to devour it over winter break. Per usual with him, it was an interesting concept. It’s not how short the book is, but how it makes you feel. This book was sad and light at the same time. While it wasn’t a normal heavyweight, it sure can be a contender for the featherweight.

Dunno what all the fuss is about. Ok, it's far from his best work thats for sure but to me it's just another fictional short story, certainly didn't feel political at all, not sure why some say it does.

It's not one of his that I'd strongly recommend but I'd not put it as one to avoid either. Thought it was OK
....the small town shunning of the lesbian couple is where the "political" comes from for me.....it echoes overtones of contemporary disagreement over acceptance or rejection of the LGBTQ segment of our populace.....at least in my opinion that's the issue......

Something that is a part of the book Gwendy is mentioned in Elevation. Being there are references to things within the Gwendy's story that are also part of Elevation, it could easily be considered a sequel. ( a continuation)
Having read Elevation so recently I'm embarrassed to say I missed these references. Can somebody use the spoiler tags to clue me in? Loved Gwendy but really can't remember any connections with Elevation.
