I was wondering what you all like for short stories,in the horror genre,as we are here on SK's site,I think he writes some of the best shorts, and maybe it is some of his best writing..no need for a top ten or anything like that, just what you like..I will start with my favorite SK short, though I could fill the page with them..going to give other writers equal time.. :)
Crouch End,by SK..a short walk in the London back areas, goes horribly wrong..Misty kinda wrong..
Canavan's Backyard,by Joseph Payne Brennan..disturbing,mind stretching type of story..
The Finnegan,by Ray Bradbury..arachnophobists need not apply..
Rio Grande Gothic,by David Morrell..you will never look at the guy selling you tomatoes and cucumbers at the farmers market the same way again..
The Dead Valley,by Ralph Adams Cram..another walk goes wrong(should we stay home and not go for walks?!) an older tale, but still disquieting..
The Mark of the Beast,by Rudyard Kipling..a howling good time..

As many or as few as you like, just wondering what you all like for short fiction like our SK produces... :)

...as a kid, I chewed up quite a bit of Lovecraft, Ambrose Bierce and the like, then I got into Splatter Punk shorts and stories by Skipp & Spector, munched onJoe R.Lansdale and Ray Bradbury, and pretty much feasted on new horror anthologies anytime I could find them...

Sheridan Le Fanu - Carmilla, a vampire tale from the late 19th century
Arthur Machen - The Great God Pan
HP Lovecraft - every damn thing, but Pickman's Model and Dunwich Horro were the ones I read in school that made me seek out his work
Edgar Allan Poe - Masque of the Red Death always stood out to me, but I love everything he wrote

The Monkey's Paw by W.W. Jacobs. This one leaped to my mind immediately, which may come as no surprise to some of you, since my favorite King novel is Pet Sematary which riffs off of this famous gem.
Oh absolutely, Pet Sematary is by far the most disturbing King book. The Poe connection is a nice touch. There was one story in Full Dark No Stars (and I can't think of the title right now) that gave me the same kind of sensory heebie jeeebies, but not in a good way. I loved Pet Semetary because the moments from your worst nightmares balanced lovingly with characters like Jud Crandall and Pascal.

I wish I had the time to get into The Yellow wallpaper right now. (Not literally!)
That is what is kind of cool about shorts, you can read one,or two, just before sleep, and not suffer too much loss of sleep, while a full length SK novel or another author,I may read until daylight..and I feel like I ate the whole pig at a pig roast.. ;)
