Good evening, my name is Ben, I'm a fellow writer, and I've been a King fan for a long time but this is my first time to enter the message forums. I'm currently working my way through Under the Dome before I watch the show and I'm about 3/4 of the way through so don't spoil the ending for me :)

One little conflict I have with the Dome is–and the book was published in 2009–when Ernie Calvert supposedly hot-wired a van found behind Big Jim's car-lot(I imagine SK would already know where I'm going with this and is why he didn't initially name the make, model, or year of the van)–how did he hot-wire it by connecting two wires under the steering wheel when most vehicles post 1998 can't be hot-wired in this fashion? I totally get why he didn't specify or explain this as for story's sake most people overlook the how or why of stealing vehicles, but I think this is generally why most people in the movies (improbably) find the keys stuffed in the overhead sun-shade. I just chocked it up to a small town and that this was a very old early 90's-ish Chevy van that happened to be at the back of Rennie's used car lot. Other than that rather vague part that made me cock an eyebrow as a former lockout locksmith, it's been a fairly consistent story.

Thanks for all your hard work, SK!

-Ben

Hi Ben, welcome to the site. :)

I don't know about other people but it wasn't until 2014 that I had a vehicle dating past 1996 so it didn't even occur to me during reading that it might be a newer van. :biggrin2:

No spoilers on the UTD (book or) TV series other than to prepare you that the show varies a great deal from the book.

I think it was a case of literary liberties. Movies and TV shows still have actors doing this as part of their plot lines all the time. In fact, I just saw it on an episode of The Blacklist a couple weeks ago. I wouldn't have known you can't do that to newer vehicles but my SO made a comment about that not being possible.
