According to Amazon, which I have been checking pretty regularly for months, the mass market paperback version of Finders Keepers is set to come out in March. There is no regular trade paperback in existence though (just a large print paperback also releasing in March). Am I missing something? Doesn't the trade paperback usually come out about a year after the hardcover and then the mass market paperback some time after that? Is there not going to be a trade paperback of Finders Keepers? That would be upsetting to me because I have Mr. Mercedes in trade paperback and am a fan of uniformity.

Seems like the trade paperbacks (larger than the mass-market ones) have been coming out about 5-6 months after the hardcover release, then the mass-market paperback coming a few months after that.

It is the large print edition that comes out in March.

Right. There's a large print paperback and a Pocket Books mass market paperback both coming out in March. What I'm wondering is where is the regular-print, regular-size paperback? (Gallery Books was the trade paperback publisher of the previous book in the series, as well as many other recent King works.) (There is a trade paperback of Finders Keepers listed on Amazon, but it's the UK-published version.) How could there not be a US trade paperback version of a Stephen King bestseller? Especially one that's part of a series—I would expect a publishing deal to cover all the books in a series.

Upon further digging, I've found a Gallery Books trade paperback version of Finders Keepers available on Amazon.ca. (ISBN: 9781501140655) It was apparently released January 5, 2016. Does anyone have any idea why this would only be available in Canada?

I put in a request for information on the 20th but am still waiting to hear back. The current trend has not been to do both mass market and trade paperback sizes but I didn't want to say anything until I had more concrete information directly from the publisher.

Okay, it's time to look stupid and ask. What are mass market paperback and trade paperback and regular print regular size paperback?
The difference? :a11:

Mostly the size either of the book or the font. Mass market is smaller than trade paperback and large print is just that, a larger font for those with vision issues. And you're not stupid for not knowing. I bet there were others hoping someone would ask.

Here we go. I now have the official information from the publisher (Pocket).

Finders Keepers will only be released as a premium mass-market, no trade paperback. I'm told it's the same size as the paperback edition of Mr. Mercedes. It's set to come out 3/22/16 with a SRP of $9.99.

Odd, that. Was there a reason given? Seems strange to not put out a trade size since they've been doing that for quite a few years now.

Unless I misunderstood, they didn't do a trade paperback for Mr. Mercedes either, just the premium mass-market. It sounds like this is a compromise as it's bigger than the traditional mass-market but smaller than a trade paperback. My guess is it has to do with production costs and payback. With the economy, people other than collectors aren't likely to buy both so it may be a financial decision to save costs. It may also be that more of the market is going to ebooks--just a thought.
I wasn't involved in the process, so that's just a guess on my part.

But there is a trade paperback of MM. Here it is next to the mass market of Joyland:

Yeah, just for the record, I ordered the Canadian version of the Gallery trade paperback and it's not the same size as the Gallery paperback of Mr. Mercedes. (When I ordered MM, though, it was referred to as a trade paperback, not a mass market—at least on Amazon.)
