I think he started writing several novels during college, many of which he abandoned (he reworked one of them and later published it as Under the Dome), but I think his first completed novel was Rage, then The Long Walk. I need to do some research to be sure. In the foreword of The Bachman Books King talks about writing Getting It On (which became Rage) and The Long Walk during the years of 1966 and 1967. As you said, it wasn't until Carrie that he was published.

Although he started writing Rage (Getting it On) first, The Long Walk was the first one he finished. Then he finished Rage.
