Spiced baked chicken, butter-cooked and spiced asparagus, and thin hand-sliced potatoes and onions fried up in canola oil, because olive oil doesn't work well at the heat needed.

The asparagus, potatoes, and onions came from the farmer's market this afternoon.

Grandma pronounced it delicious several times, and finally putting humility aside, I had to agree. I said, "I would pay a restaurant for this."

She gave me the sweetest smile and said, "And we're getting it right here at home."

Life is good.

Sounds wonderful Grandpa! Asparagus is not affordable here, yet. The Farmer's Market won't start until next weekend for us. We go with peanut oil for the frying, you're right about olive oil.

Tonight we had something called ButterYaki. Sliced veggies (mushroom, onion, zucchini, yam) and strips of meat cooked on a hibachi (meat) and an electric skillet with butter (veggies). Dip in a soy/ginger sauce to cool and... yum! Served with rice. We discovered this on our honeymoon in Waikiki and have done our best to recreate it ever since.

I need to get some peanut oil. I almost always use olive oil, sometimes butter, but as I was slicing up the taters last night, I realized I needed something else. We just happened to have canola in the back of the cupboard.

I tried Fried Green Tomatoes for the first time yesterday. I was at the BF's house, and we had brunch at a local farm to table restaurant.....they were thinly sliced, very lightly breaded, seasoned, fried to perfection, and drizzled with something called Voodoo sauce.....OMG, I can't believe it took me 49 years to try them!

They are sour, bitter and have a nice acidity. During summer months I will make them or order them as an alternative to okra. They are delicious by themselves but pair well with a remoulade sauce; perhaps a shrimp po-boy and fried green tomatoes. So...what is a voodoo sauce?

Alberta is where we grow canola. It has no taste or odor which makes it ideal for cooking or using as a vinegarette. It is just as healthy as olive oil. Many chefs swear by it.

That was the first time I had experienced voodoo sauce as well.....It's kind of like a sweet & sour sauce with a spicy kick.

That why you fry them in cornmeal... to give them a little sweetness. When I see flour fried green tomatoes I think "blasphemy!!!"

That sounds delicious Grandpa!

Sunny - fried green tomatoes, yes with cornmeal, of course! There's a café here that makes a fried green tomato BLT - so darn good.

I made my version of goulash this evening. Not very exciting - I'll think about making dinner exciting tomorrow. Maybe grilled something. My broccoli is looking like it's ready to pick and I tasted it this morning - it tastes like broccoli so YAY me! We shall have home grown broccoli tomorrow!

Sounds wonderful! It;s a great feeling sitting down to and enjoying a home cooked meal.
Side note: being Italian I saute/fry just about everything in olive oil. If one is careful and keeps a vigilant eye on the heat, it's fine.
