Sounds like he's a late bloomer, in which case you'll give up on him ever seeming adult-like long before he starts showing it.

You could disguise yourself as something other than a mom. Maybe a nun. (Deej dressed like a nun...hmmm...kinda hot!)
Seeing as how the young man has an aversion to cleaning maybe Dana Jean should disguise herself as a vacuum cleaner to make a clean getaway.

I have a fresh (mouthed) almost 17 (tomorrow) year old on offer. She's smart as hell (and she knows it), but can't figure out how to pick up clothes, trash, tea mugs...pretty much anything. You won't have to worry about changing her carpet because you'll never see it. Be prepared for an education in all things political, social, and scientific, because this kid knows EVERYTHING (she read it on FB or Tumblr, you know, so it's much more topical and intelligent than anything you think).

Guess I'm odd-- I absolutely can't stand for anything to be out of place in my room (don't even get me started on dirty dishes....) and I usually do my own laundry. I've never liked messes.
My 21 year old is just like you. His dad is wondering if we should start charging him rent (not to be mean, but so he can get an idea what that's like), and I'm saying, "NO! He's the only one we don't have to constantly ask to clean up! I don't want him to go!" lol
