Gard's Illness

I have read Tommyknockers 5 times but couldn't figure out whether Gard was suffering from Tuberculosis or another illness, as he was permanently spitting blood. Could someone give an explanation.

I always thought it was from his binge drinking and blackouts. Maybe he was suffering from an alcohol-related disease? I do know that, even with the steel plate in his head, he wasn't completely immune to the ship/Tommyknockers. Then, at the end, he was
physically injured and slowly dying from these injuries.

...bleeding ulcers or leaking esophageal varices could do it as well, now that I have a bit of nursing knowledge, but ruptured varices would have killed him in no time...could have been stomach cancer complications too...
