Some of Mr. King's writing reminds me of Mervyn Peake and his great "Gormenghast Novels." Has anyone read these, and if so, do you have an opinion? Is Mr. King familiar with Mervyn Peake?

Yes, Thanks for the reply. What I do know is that the Gormenghast novels are some of the most important (and little known?) examples of the genre...sort of like H.P. Lovecraft thirty years later.

P.S. I haven't read any Stephen King novels for awhile and am now immersed in the Dark Tower novels, while "It" awaits. I had forgotten that Mr. King's writing isn't only excellent from a technical point of view but he also weaves in historical events and social causes (such as racism) into the narrative which, for me at least, makes them all the more enjoyable.
