I bought The Night Shift last night and just read this story, was there any sort of follow up? I'm desperate to know what happened to the other workmen

What intrigued me most about this tale (during a recent re-read) was the "...huge wooden box with white letters on it. 'Elias Varney,' he read, '1841.'" that they find upon entering the sub cellar. Could this be a vampire? A descendant of the late Sir Francis Varney (the vampyre), perhaps? I prefer to think it was.

Only King knows for sure (if, that is, he hasn't forgotten this intriguing little offhand detail), and he ain't talkin.

Someone needs to make a Jerusalem's Lot movie. Somebody that knows how. They'd probably have to change the name so stupid people don't get confused. Call it Dear Bones or something, say. Might have to beef the story up for feature length, but I can think of ways they could do it without screwing it up.

Give it a Hammer Horror vibe, Lovecraftian Dark Shadows.

But in the wrong hands it'd just be stupid.
