I moved all the posts that were in the July birthdays thread over to this one that you started for Mal but can't fix it so that it shows you being the person who initiated it.
That's great - thanks very much Marsha!

(Doesn't matter who started it - well, unless you were in my family as a youngster and Mom wanted to know which kid was the "instigator" of the bru-ha-ha) Thanks for that flashback :cheerful:

Thank you everyone for the birthday wishes! I couldn't click on all the 'Likes' because I still have an old browser I guess, so I am liking it all right her, right now.

I spent my birthday at the Whiteshell Provincial Park with the grandson. We usually hike the two roughest trails in the park, McGillivray and Hunt Lake. We did the McGillivray trail and within the first 5 minutes our feet were wet and the boots were full of mud. We soldiered on and got lost a few times and had to double-back. The mosquitoes were okay but those damn deer flies were tearing chunks out of us. It was at this point I decided that I wasn't having any fun and every step was a loss of energy. Getting lost and doubling back was excruciating as I needed to save those steps to get out of the forest! Later that night by the campfire we discovered that we were thinking similar thoughts, but coming at it from different directions. He was thinking "I'm not going to let that old bastard show me up, I'll do my best to stick with him." I was thinking "I'm not going to let that smartass little punk show me up, I'll do my best to stick with him." All in all it was a good trip but we didn't do the Hunt lake trail. A man's got to know his limits.

We've done this trip for the last 6 years or so, and our tradition is, once we get back in the city we hit a cineplex and find a movie to watch in cold air-conditioned comfort. We saw the new Spidey movie and I could smell the sour stink of old sweat and campfire smoke wafting off of us. It was a good thing for the rest of the theatre-goers that it was not very full so they could sit away from us.

My favourite trip in the last 6 years was about three years ago we decided to hit the road without a destination. The only rule was to stay on dirt roads and trails and avoid highways and pavement at all costs. We saw a lot of amazing things. I think that's what we'll do next year (unless I finally get off my butt and apply for a passport. If I get one we'll head down South to see the 4 big heads carved in stone in South Dakota).

Wildlife seen yesterday...bald eagle (first time I've seen one), several deer (mamma and 2 fawns), wild feral pig (those things freak me out...even their grunts sound like '666'), black bear (a yearling by the side of the road), campground folk (someone should do a national geographic special on them).

Thanks again everyone and of course...all the best, mal.

In the unlikely event that I encounter a wild pig in the woods, I will now only hear '666'. Thanks, Mal. Does this mean that I'll run faster in the opposite direction?
Glad you had a good time hiking with your grandson and enjoyed your birthday.

Jim will have to do all the heavy lifting while Marlin sits in the Jeep discussing how the campground folk are roasting Jim over a spit while basting him in Coors Light and baked bean juice.

You are such a cool Poppa, Grandpa, Pops, Pa, Granddad, GrandMal! This sounds like tons of fun! (It's similar to the "Left, Right" game we used to play. The kids get to say left or right at each road and you just keep driving until you get lost. Such fun!)
