Im sorry guys but i absolutely hated this book,no mystery,no horror, just a girl lost in the woods. I feel like this book was a quota filler. So far this is my least favorite book by sk and im a big fan of his,but i was very disappointed.

I'm not a big fan of it , but I do like it; I can appreciate it for what it is. Given that SK is huge baseball fan, I think this book came from the heart.

As for "no horror" (your words), if you think SK is still just a "horror writer" you haven't really been paying attention, have you?

btw... Welcome to the board!

My least favorite SK books would rate as "pretty decent". I haven't even come close to hating a SK book. They all have something that I enjoy about them even if the story as a whole isn't my favorite. This one would be somewhere in the bottom 3rd I would say, but there were some really enjoyable parts and I had no trouble getting through it.

Haven't read it. There are some I didn't care too much for, but a long way from hate. Those would be Cell, Blaze, HIA, Dreamcatcher, Thinner, Buick 8.

He's a commercial business. Some probably are just to fill quotas, more than works from the heart.

Nothing wrong with that.

They were all entertaining enough though.

I really don't believe that sK has a quota. I think his imaginative range is very broad, so that some fans don't get of his ideas because those ideas aren't their cut of sK tea.

As for The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon, I thought it was brilliant. I really felt what the girl was going through. I could feel her fatigue, just as I could feel Garraty's in The Long Walk.

Felt the same way Blunt..ever been lost in the woods?I was, with a sister of mine, only for an hour or so,when in that same age range..and the terror of not knowing where you are or when you are going to be found,is quite rough for a kid...we found our way to landmarks and knew then where we were, but I can identify with this book, and also for having participated in searches for lost kids since as well..

Yes, I've been lost in woods. That's part of what makes me appreciate the writing. How she gets lost is perfectly written, imho.

My son (who is cognitively challenged but still high functioning enough to be unmonitored) decided he would go explore a walking trail when we were on the Isle of Arran in 2005.
I had to work at Andy's restaurant, but I still felt a moment of trepidation when he said he was going to go check out "that trail Uncle Bill was talking about".
Well of course (you guessed it!) he got lost in the forest and by nightfall after he had been gone for many hours we had to call the police. They sent a helicopter from the mainland.
I am not sure how scared he was, but I was so filled with anxiety over him not being found and so greatly relieved when they did find him with a great big search light they had on the helicopter. So - yes, that book was quite realistic, I thought. He almost looked like he was in shock when he came back and I thank God he was found.

* by the way, as Scotland is so hilly, I learned something after that happened. They said if you ever find yourself lost to just keep moving in a downhill direction.

He had a camera with him and when we got the film developed there is one that looks sort of a like a big light. He doesn't remember but I think he took a picture of the chopper landing :courage:

I think Tom Gordon is excellent. I could really feel every step of the way that that girl took. And to get get lost in the woods is horrific for a little girl so there was plenty of that everyday horror that SK is so good at. It just shows his strength that he doesn't need monsters to create horror and his strenth as a writer to keep at least me caught in the story when there only one person on stage. It is rather characteristic of him that he sometimes writes books with a lot of characters like IT. The Stand or Under the dome and sometimes books with a very limited cast of characters like Geralds Game, Dolores Claiburne or TGWLTG. I like them both.

I actually found this to be one of his worst (although still re-readable!) I found there was a little bit too much description and not too much happening, however the premise of the wendigo at the end did give me a lot of creepy thoughts and redeemed it, I'll definitely read it different when I re read.
