Well, it depends on your preferences. My favorite short story is My Pretty Pony. There's nothing supernatural about it, though. If you wants scares in a short story, you can't go wrong with either The Raft or The Monkey. Book-length stories....again, depends on what you want. Scary? Try The Shining or Pet Semetary. Want a mystery? Start the Bill Hodges trilogy with Mr. Mercedes. Another mystery is Joyland - but it's so much more than that. One of his best, IMO. I'm sure others will have recommendations, too.
