Hi all,

My name is Tarryn.I reside in Jogannesburg,South Africa.I fell in love with reading when I was twelve and read Shirley Conrans Savages.I cant afford to travel so books have become a means to exploring other cultures and countries. The first Stephen King book I read was thinner, over the years MR King has become my absolute favourite. Is it true he is mentally ill?

I don't think so much upset as curious. I for one have never heard a whisper in that direction before and i have been reading stories by him and stories about him for about 35 years now. So welcome and know now that these magazines just spread a rumour that is false.

Welcome to the SKMB! Keep posting! Stephen King is actually a very sane, normal type of genius, unlike say Salvador Dali who was indeed crazy. I think if sK didn't write the kinds of stories he does he might go crazy, though (he might've said as much). Apparently, there's some lingering mythology out there about him based on assumption, not fact.

I have read it in several magazines. The best author ever but why is everyone getting upset over a question. The guy is not a god!
...whoa girl, time to rein it in!...you are a new member to a Board that is highly appreciative of "the Man"...warts and all...I wasn't losing my mind over it(see what I did there?), I was just curious as to where you found that notion cited...King himself has stated he might be crazy, but certainly never gone off his rocker in the classic sense...his addictions to drink and drugs were probably the closest he's come to a fitting for the backwards tuxedo-but thankfully, he has cleaned himself up and remains so-decades after his personal darkness...and by the by, you WILL catch some grief for posing such a question-it's just human nature, but for the most part-we don't eat our young here...

...Wow, just wow...I answer you in a respectful manner and pass along my thoughts, without much emotional coloring in my opinion...plus, I try to give you an idea that people are passionate about King and are very protective of him here, but that we in large part don't via the written word-chew anyone up and spit them out...i.e. treat them rudely...in response to this, you attack and libel me?...so much for trying to help...and by the way-you don't know me, so how dare you judge me?...good day young lady...

I think this may be a case of words not translating well via this medium. GNTLGNT is a funny guy and has a great sense of humor which you will come to realize if you stick around but it was hard to read if your responses were coming across as serious or if you were joking as well as we don't have the benefit of body language.

I do apologise sincerely.I can certainly appreciate someone who has read Stephen Kings books for 35 years.I was not trying to attack Stephen King,I was curious as I have heard many stories regarding Stephen Kings mental health.

As someone who has worked for him for over 26 years, I can personally assure you that his mental health is just fine. :smile2: Some of his fans whose letters I've read, now that's an entirely different matter!
