Help Refugees But Not Little Girl?

Prime Minister Harper cut a lot of the free medical help for refugees. We were paying for everything for them...drugs, dental, the whole works. After it was cut, I was in a dentist office and this new immigrant went crazy demanding free dental care there. They tried to explain that you cannot have this anymore but he wasn't getting it. Here was me, taking part of my rent money and a few pints of my blood(if needed) to pay for a root canal. Canada can no longer afford to give old age pensions at the rate we are going. The age has been raised to 67 before it can be had. Anyway, the Ontario government is trying to shame the feds to give the immigrants back the status, that none of us enjoy, while this little girl is in a bad bad spot. Thoughts please

I'm reminded of watching this show on television here in the States...Suzie Orman. Might have her name wrong, but she is a type of financial adviser, people call in w/ a request, "Suzie, can I buy it?" She asks them to "Show me the money!" They proceed to outline their stock options, their 401K, their this, their that, their other...and often...we're talking big bucks, like hundreds of thousands of dollars socked away in various Plans. Depending on what they'd like to purchase and depending on their financial situation, Suzie either shoots them down or says, "You have been APPROVED!" Honestly, the show is depressing, as after being self-employed now for 25 years, after more or less barely making ends meet most years, after going through winter after winter of little to no work, my Plan is nada. I'd be embarrassed to say what I have socked away. I'm not complaining and I'm not worried...but I can easily imagine hundreds, thousands of people reading the above story...and turning the page...people who have thousands socked away. I hope that things work out for all concerned, that maybe some Good Samaritan steps forward...someone with ungodly amounts of money socked away...someone whom Suzie Orman would tell, You have been APPROVED! When all the paper in the world burns up, who owns what? I like that some have raised or have helped raise money.

I think charity begins at home. We have to look after our own first. The argument about immigrants making it better for the economy is a lie. A large number of them come here and go right on welfare. It makes no sense. Canada can afford to send millions in aid to needy countries. Why can't they send millions to folks who need orphan drugs here in this country. These kids and adults really need these meds to live. Is the government foolish? Help the folks who are already here. I have to pay through the nose for meds and everything. Why should Joe Blow from some other continent come here and get for free what I cannot get? I worry about the seniors in our society. We need better continuing care for them....they have earned it.

What little I have is socked away in my panty drawer.....after being self employed and barely making it all these years, I always wonder how people accumulate the hundreds of thousands to sock away.

I think if you are not a legalized citizen of the country you don't get handouts. If you want the handouts go get naturalized. But then again I have issues with how many people (citizens) are getting government money when they don't need it and I see the ones who could really use it not able to get help at all. Its a whole corrupt, screwed up system and ticks me off. ...... and now i will just step down off my little soap box and slink back into the corner :redface-new:

Agreed. I live in the States and think we should refocus our efforts here. Too many people barely scraping by... regardless of what the squawk box says, the economy SUCKS. Companies are cutting back on benefits and reducing the workforce, many (under) employed.

I compare it to a family. If the parents are barely scraping by feeding and clothing their children, would they invite strangers in to share the little bit they got and stretch it more? The strangers may like it but the children would be suffering because of it. I have worked for various social agencies and have been pissed by the little bit of government aid there is there for the less fortunate. It makes me angry that our monies go to those who have just arrived. If they cannot contribute to the workforce then why take them in? We are shortchanging our own. I see so much need. I will be spending some nights next week working the kettles for the SA.
