Tough question. Fan of his work? A very long time. Fan of his work while knowing it was his work? Not nearly as long. I can't remember if IT or Stand By Me (or something earlier?) was my first introduction to the work of Stephen King, but I do know that it was a while later that I learned that he had written the stories. I was introduced to his books well after I had seen a number of the films based on his books, and I hate seeing film adaptations before reading the novels they're based on. Seeing Stephen King movies before reading the books - I had no idea they were books at the time I saw he films - is what makes me Google every movie before I see it, just to make sure it's not based on a book.

Since someone handed me the paperback of 'Salem's Lot, the one with the all black cover and the embossed face of the girl with one drop of blood in the corner of her mouth, way back in 1975 and I have been a devourer of all things King since. Didn't really become a mega-fan until after reading The Stand and Night Shift, that's when I realized that this guy can write about anything and make it believeable.

What's up with the gap between 14 and 20 years? Where are those people?

I just became the first person to fall in that span. No idea for why there is nobody else in there. As for me, I was a Senior in HS and my girlfriend (who was a raving psycho consequently) lent me her copy of The Talisman. It was all over from there. All over meaning the beginning of my SK obsession and the end of relationship in question not long after lol.
