I gotta admit, he got me, I was fooled. I remember entertaining the idea of him as a suspect at one point but dismissing it entirely, I don't recall my exact reasoning. But I was enjoying the rest of the story so much that in-between talk of the murders I usually didn't think about them too much. But I did bring him back into the mix after the day at the park, because the book by that point was hinting heavily that somebody there that day was involved and there were only two.
I had my money on the manager, as I think Stephen was probably trying to steer us into doing, because I wasn't sure if he was being creepy or genuinely nice with his magic and grinning host routine. Plus suddenly going on and on about his carny past. In hindsight I guess it was some last-minute misdirection to throw people off before the twist but at the time I thought it was a slow reveal.

To be honest, I was so caught up in the lovely story and environment that I forgot to wonder who did it most of the time. It's a wonderful book. However, when I got to the part where Devin is startled by "all those unsuspected muscles", I suspected Fred. Not that Devin was alarmed for that reason, but I thought it was a clue for us; there is more to Fred Dean than we thought.

That sums it up for me. I didn't worry so much about the mystery aspect of the book. I was too involved with the characters and the place and the gestalt.

I just finished this one before "Under the Dome" and I didn't bother trying to solve the crime. I enjoyed letting this one play out at it's own pace and just enjoyed each page and the story as a whole. Loved the setting of the amusement park and the side story with a little bit of shine even though it was a "hard case" novel. It's nice that King can slip in his trademark supernatural element even in a book made for a different audience.
I wonder how well received the book was by the TRUE hard core mystery/crime followers?
