Congrats on being unmoderated, klerkast. I grew up in a time when we had air raid drills on a regular basis and the siren went off every day at noon, just to be sure it worked, I figure. It was mind numbing being under that thing when it went off. I remember as kids if we were close to it at noon we would run as fast as we could to get as far away from it and the deafening sound. We had training on getting to the air raid shelters and even did the duck and cover drill, although it was about a decade after the actual training came out. The nuns in our school were at least a decade behind everything, and I guess thought we might be able to survive a nuke explosion. Kinda felt cheated as a kid doing all that training and no freakin' invasion ever occurred.
Remember that time period well. Had a neighbor -- had a wine cells so he built a bomb shelter next to it.

DiO'Bolic: Thanks! Wow, that sounds intense. And I can imagine you felt cheated, all that effort and tension for nothing.

GNTLGNT: Ha well, I think that's a good trait!
I remember being on the police shooting team as a very young boy. We used .22 caliber rifles. The chief of police always taught us to shoot true so we could protect ourselves when the commies invaded. It was a completely different era back then. The only commie I knew back then was Boris Badenov and his sidekick Natasha. :)

First of all, I'm no longer moderated, yay! :joyous: Not that it was bad, I didn't mind at all. But I couldn't post in fast moving threads or forum games, because there's no point in it if your post appears after five other replies have buried your message (especially in games). Now I can! :bat:

The other happy is a little odd, but it's a happy nonetheless. So as a kid, I was terrified of the civil defense siren. It got better as I got older, I could handle the monthly tests, but I was still terrified that that thing would go off for real. Up until last night.

...We were woken up by that godawful sound at 4 AM. At first I was paralysed, but then reason kicked in. I got out of bed (calmly! :icon_eek: ), turned on the computer, and went to our local news site to see what was wrong. It was "just" a huge fire that was spreading dangerous fumes. Why is that a happy? Because I didn't freak out, and it wasn't the end of the world! I always thought that if the sirens went off, it would mean that complete mayhem had broken out, and my life would be over. Last night I found out that the sirens can go off, and we will still be okay. I am no longer afraid of it. :star:

This is a little thing, but still made me happy. Had an appointment today and there's a little boutique in the strip mall next to where I was. I don't shop much anymore, but love to look at jewelry.

The manager of the store started talking to me and she is just the sweetest thing ever. A young, single mom who put herself through college and is just genuinely nice. It's rare that I meet kind people in real life and it was a blessing to visit with her for a while. My gawd, I sound like I'm 90 years old - probably seemed like it to her. LOL Maybe I should bake her cookies or offer her some hard candies. ;;D

I am happy today because Alison had a good report at the Dr. I did not really expect anything different, because she rarely needs to go to the Dr. They said to me when I called for the appointment, We haven't seen her in 6 years! I said, Well, she is healthy!

But I am even more happy with the results from her eye appointment. She had a lazy eye and has needed a very strong prescription. But she kept telling me she was seeing better without her glasses and I pish poshed the idea. But she is...she could not read anything but the bigger letters on the chart with her glasses on. With them off, she was rattling off the smaller lines with no hesitation at all. Her new glasses will have a weaker prescription. :applause:

And also happy with the eye Dr. Our old one retired not too long after she got her last pair of glasses. But the new guy worked alongside him for a while and was deemed worthy to take over the practice. So that gave me some comfort, but you still don't truly know until you see him yourself. He was wonderful. Very personable and easy to talk to.

It has been a good day! :):)

Oh, and I forgot! The Dr Ali saw this morning, she has family around where I grew up. So she was rattling off names to me, to see if I knew any of them, and she says, They are about your age. Mid 30's.

I started laughing and said, That is the nicest thing anyone has said to me in a while...I'm 44.

It made me feel pretty good. :applause:

I'm sort of happy today in that we are supposed to go out for Chinese food tonight (but first I need to go see the Weight Watchers folks) - there is a meeting over on the other side of the river.

Here are some pointers I found online:

(I think these tips are for the buffet style places):

Chinese Restaurant Guide

You need to remember that sodium in soy sauce and things like MSG that are very common in Chinese food are going to cause water retention and weight gain. While it is temporary, it will still reflect on the scales.

  • If you want rice or noodles, choose the steamed rice or rice noodles that have not been fried
  • Pick the Hibachi option and build your own plate with zero point foods and spices instead of sugar and oil-laden sauces
  • Choose steamed vegetables that aren’t cooked in oils and sauces
  • Skip all deep fried foods, including egg rolls
  • Egg drop and hot and sour soups are great to fill up on for low points, but they are high in sodium so may result in water retention weight gain
  • Shrimp, chicken breast, tofu, and all vegetables are zero points by themselves, so easy to create a low point meal when you request no sauce or sauce on the side.
  • Skip the desserts and choose fresh fruit instead

Hi Nomik - are you still dropping the pounds like crazy?

:shake::clap:
