The film Close Encounters of the Third Kind. One of the biggest letdowns of all time. Luckily I attended with three people as unimpressed as I was.

One of the Internet Movie Database replacement forums has a poll going as to which of the three versions is best, to which I replied:

Is the 1998 Director's Cut of Close Encounters of the Third Kind overwhelmingly better than the 1977 theatrical release, which I remember as quite possibly the hugest letdown of any film I have ever seen, proportional to the amount of anticipation? I vividly remember the buildup, the heartfelt endorsement by my favorite author, Ray Bradbury (on TV, not in print), huge write-ups in national magazines, and many details of that awful evening at the drive-in when my friend's mother took me and her youngest daughter and son to sit through an interminable succession of dramatically-rendered scenes amounting to a tale full of sound and fury, signifying nothing. My friend's little brother, a little older than the main boy in the movie, mercifully had the good sense and good luck to sleep through part of it but the rest of us just sat stunned and staring, hoping that it would eventually come together and amount to a meaningful narrative, as our hopes slowly deflated and our spirits were dashed and downcast though stopping short of crushed. We were at least momentarily amused by the little ball of light following the larger craft. I've never had the patience to sit through it since but when I have caught parts on TV the scenes I see have that same irritating, exasperating effect. The boy smashing the doll against the crib is nails on a blackboard Chinese water torture, and one of the few fairly brilliant moments--the director knew just when to have the father intervene before the audience totally lost its last shreds of patience and sanity.

I can say exactly the same about ET, including going with 3 people who were also let down. By the end of the movie I was wishing he would just die.

I did like Close Encounters at the time though. Today, I can't stand it.

Well, I did enjoy Close Encounters, mostly, but the part that had my peers all impressed
when the ship came up from behind Devil's Tower
just had me muttering, "Oh, come on."
I mean, how did that massive thing hide back there? I've been to Devil's tower and walked around it.
Completely trashed the willing suspension of disbelief for me.
And yeah, I knew it was Devil's Tower from the first shot at the mashed potatoes.

....I just got annoyed by everybody trying to shape everything malleable into the damn Tower......

I haven't been to Devils Tower yet. My brother and i has put it on the list for next visit. Last year Chaco Canyon and New Mexico, next time Devils Tower and... Wyoming, isn't it?

Yup, Devil's Tower is in Wyoming. Kind of in the middle of nowhere, which makes it all that much more remarkable, rising out of the surroundings. Once you get there, it's a relatively easy hike around the base. There's even a paved trail, and jumbles of rock to clamber over for fun. I believe ascents are done through arrangement with the National Park Service.

I never thought much of this film either.

There were some climbers ascending Devil's Tower when I visited there back in 2003. It was fascinating to watch them. I spent more time watching them then I did walking around the trail. The place is definitely worth the trip.

...well, why walk-when you can watch and have a beer & a cigarette????....amiright?????....

Yeah, it looked like way, way too much effort they were expending. Much easier to sit on the bench and watch...kind of an eerie place. One of the park rangers I spoke with said a live snake had been found on top of the tower one time several years before.....I'm not sure if he was screwing with me or if he was serious. My wife at the time and I could never figure out if he was being truthful....lol. Is that even possible?..lol
