I must admit I’m not a massive fan of short stories, but I am now working my way through SK’s collection because I have read most of his novels.

That is, with the exception of ‘The Dark Tower Series’

I read ‘The Gunslinger’ & ‘The Drawing of the Three’ when they were first released, then bought ‘The Wizard & The Glass’ and never read it (incidentally, I’ve also bought ‘Black House’ twice and still haven’t read that - so many SK books, and so little time!)

So, When I read the pre-amble for ‘Little Sisters’ I thought; Oh god, am I going to be able to get through this?

I must admit; I found the first 20 pages hard going, but then something amazing (well amazing to me, anyway!) happened.

I started to turn the pages without realising I was doing it. I was hooked on the story, and actually enjoying being back in the world of; ‘Roland of Gil-e-ad’ (or is it just Gilead?!?)

I know it’s a retrospective story, but it has whetted my appetite for more!

I’ve always wanted to like DT because I like SK, but now (but not yet) I feel like I can actually read it, and enjoy it.

However, wether I enjoy it or not, I’m determined to read it anyway.

That may seem strange to some people, but I firmly believe in loyalty, and I couldn’t consider myself to be a true SK fan, or a fan of any author for that matter, without reading his or her Magnum Opus.

Back to the ‘Little Sisters’

SORRY, I DONT KNOW WHICH ONE THE SPOILER BUTTON IS -

so, if you don’t want to know the end of the story; skip the next few paragraphs, down to the next set of CAPITALS:-

Roland should have slept with Jenna on that final night, but he didn’t because he was either too fatigued or she was too inhuman, or both - so they settled for a passionate kiss before falling asleep in each other’s arms.

What I want to know is this;

Bearing in mind this is a prequal to a 7 or 8 book series of god knows how many words & pages...

What would have happened if they had slept together?

Would Roland have become a vampire, would Jenna have become fully or more human?

Hmm, that’s a big call.

END OF SPOILER

I’m not sure what year the first novel in the DT Series was published, but maybe I was too young to appreciate it?!?

What do you think is the main appeal of ‘The Dark Tower Series’ is, and if you were trying to persuade someone to buy the whole set of books, how would you sell it to them?

Regards,
Andy.

I read The Little Sisters of Eluria in an anthology without realizing it was linked to the Dark Tower and I loved it! :) It made me want to read all the Dark Tower novels... which I havn't gotten around to yet because although I've read The Gunslinger twice, I read the original and I think I need to read the second version.

I forgot the name of the anthology but it contained some great stories by some great authors :)

Me too (and reading posts on this Board)

The first DT book I read was The Wind Through the Keyhole and I enjoyed it, even though I had no frame of reference for many of the things mentioned in it.

The Little Sisters of Eluria is a short story originally published in 1998 in a collection called Legends: Short Novels by the Masters of Modern Fantasy. In 2002, it was collected and included in King's Everything's Eventual.

Chronologically, the story within takes place before the events of the Dark Tower Series - though after the story of Roland Deschain's past he recounts in Wizard and Glass.

Marvel Comics also published a five chapter comic series based on the story by the same name.

Legends, yes! I could not think of the name of that anthology, Thanks! :)

I've got that book "The Legends of Fantasy" edited by Jack Dann. Did they make a movie out of that story? I didn't know they made a movie out of the Little Sisters story? Sorry, I'm thinking of the books 'Legends of Australian Fantasy', I've also got the other book, edited by Robert Silverberg.

Probably sounds strange but I was always very intrigued by the cover art from The Wind through the Keyhole, and yet I haven't read any of the Dark Tower books. I just finished Sisters, and based on your comment I wonder if I'd be better off starting back at Gunslinger, or trying something at random like Keyhole.

I haven't started these yet both because of the time commitment and because I don't think I'm ready. Sisters seemed to confirm that for me--I just felt like I had absolutely nothing to grasp onto for the first 40 pages. By the end, I was sufficiently impressed by the creativity and the mythology behind it, and the imagery was very cool, too. But I was still a little frustrated. I wasn't entirely sure I knew what the ending meant. Maybe I'm still just not ready yet. I found The Eyes of the Dragon equally entrancing, but so much more accessible, for lack of a better word.
