I know, he's one of the screen's biggest legends, and any true connoisseur of cinema would certainly tear me a new orifice for this, but I've never seen a John Wayne film in my life. This is predominantly because I'm not into westerns or war movies, unless the latter concerns Vietnam. I do have Wayne's infamous tract, The Green Berets, but I've never brought myself to watch it. I don't like it when films cram social/political/environmental/religious messages down my throat.

Try The Conquerer, featuring Wayne as Ghengis Khan. Heh heh, no, don't. That one sucks. Unless you enjoy certain bad movies like I do. You're gonna need at least a dime bag to get through it.

Too true. Sadly, the filming of this movie near Cedar City, UT exposed cast and crew to radiation from tests in Nevada. It caused cancer in an amazing percentage of them, including John Wayne.

The Quiet Man - best screen punch-up ever, looks great, very atypical Wayne
The Searchers - looks absolutely fabulous, Wayne actually acts
Donovan's Reef - fairly frothy comedy with non-preachy subtext about racism. Lovely Hawaiian scenery, some sexist attitudes on display
True Grit - iconic, beautiful scenery, you have to put up with Kim Darby though
The Shootist - a personal epitaph: poetic and final

If you're unsure then there aren't any others I would recommend. But those 5 all have elements to enjoy even if you don't think much of Wayne.
