Wilmington DE, strange little place.
believe me , I have my douts , it might really suck
you can not take a Stephen King story and turn it into something
rated TV-PG (It; is the best excample)
and I cant even watch Under the Dome because its not the same at all.

but a few movies are gonna be good ... I liked 1408 and The Shinning.
I have my hopes up about 11/22/63 and now this..the Dark Tower.

by the Jesus man; I hope they dont #^ck it up

Essentially Sony, desperate to recoup some money after the hacks last year, have reserved a release date for the Dark Tower. This is fairly common practice and there is no confirmation on a script or actors though I think a director has been assigned. It doesn't mean it will get made though - Twentieth Century Fox had announced a release date for Fantastic Four 2 before the first one came out and that won't be getting made anytime soon.

Even if a film has a script, stars and directors it might still not get made. IT had all three and was still shut down.

I think I have rambled a fair bit about my thoughts about the DT never being turned into a movie. It will not be anywhere near a faithful adaptation and is being made because of brand recognition not ecause a good adaptation can be made. ALl my own opinion of course.

yeah, Ive been desperately waiting on two movies that are production rights "locked" at the moment but almost completely stalled:

"Rendezvous With Rama" and "Logan's Run" (proposed to be based exactly on the book - which is phenomenal - unlike the 1976 movie which was cheesily very loosely based on the book)

I've often felt that whoever undertook this massive project would have to be damned good, or their whole company would be bankrupt within a year. The DT series has such a huge following, that if they mess it up, they're through.

That being said, I've seen some great adaptations; Shawshank, Green Mile, and Stand By Me. If they were able to find a director, cast, and scriptwriter like they did for those movies, they'd be golden.

Think about it. Even though they got Red's race wrong in the movie, could anyone else have nailed that role better? The casting in all three of those movies was so spot on. And that's like, half the battle. And with the way technology has shot forward, they should be able to capture every bit of the story. If they made a movie for every book, (including TWTTK) maybe two movies for the last book or so, really went all out for this, I think it could work.

Now let's just hope someone will put that kind of time, energy, and passion into the project...

personally, I think Daniel Craig should play Roland. He's perfect for the role! And Robert Carlyle would make an excellent "Man in Black". Annika Noni Rose or Zoe Saldana might be able to capture the divided natures of Odetta. Beyond that, I'm betting a bunch of unknowns would be the ones to round out the cast and bring life to the characters, cause I can't think of anyone who would do justice to the roles of Jake, Eddie, (maybe Ryan Reynolds?) Pere Callahan, etc.

Originally, Ron Howard was proposing three films and 2-3 seasons of an accompanying TV show, ostenisbly to fill in the Gilead back story though that was unconfirmed. They got as close as almost casting Javier Bardem as Roland but then it caved in.

I am going to have to respectfully disagree with you DarkKrystl - I think casting is important but not half the battle. Even it it was a trilogy you are talking about 7 books and the first four books at least having completely styles. Drawing of the Three, if filmed as written, would be nigh on impossible to adapt. So it means having to change characters, origins and meetings to fit into a smallr window and I think that would really compromise the greatness of the books. That said, I 100% agree with Robert Carlyle for the Man in Black.

Sadly, I don't think we will get 7 films. To do so, the films would have to be pulling in big numbers, probably at least a worldwide gross of $300 + million per film assuming a budget of each film being under $100 million. The Dark Tower is well loved and has sold well but isn't necessarily going to draw comic book crowds. It is also a tough sell to non-devotees and will more than likely have to shave off the horror elements if it wants to make it a PG13 movie (which it will need to be to make any dent at the box office).

I think Shawshank and Green Mile were very different stories - they were quite self contained and quite traditional in their storytelling - they suited the big screen well and were also very well written/directed/acted. Don't forget that Shawshank was a box office bomb in theatres and only made money on Video.

I only like the Morricone bit. The rest not so much. The movie just won't work.

Hey, if someone could actually manage it--I mean, just loved and understood the material and NAILED it; could replicate the incredible mental movie that happens in my brain when I read DT, including the relevance of every reference to King's other works; if some brave and noble director had unlimited funds, time, and final cut...yeah, sure, I'll buy a ticket (or several).

I don't see any of that happening, though.

Sh1t yeh ... What we need to do is crowd fund it - a SKMB collaboration - we got all the crazies that we need here - and our very own long tall and ugly - (GNT).

We just need to fill the cast sheet - take a week off with our scripts - shoot the story board and get a soundtrack - peezy!

Dibs in for the clapperboard guy :)
