I have not read Bag Of Bones (yet!) but the movie is coming on in about a half hour. I am deathly afraid of movie versions of Mr. Kings work because it taints my opinion of the story ie Dead Zone, Christine, The Shining etc.
Is Bag of Bones in this category or is it a hidden gem like Shawshank Redemption and Green Mile?

Your opinions please! And hurry~!

While I would not classify itas a hidden gem it is good. There are some variations, but all in all faithful to the story.

A bit late replying but do you mean the TV movie (in two or three parts?) - if that is the one you are talking about, even that sexy Irishman Pierce Brosnan could not actually redeem the movie. Like Scott says, it was just "so-so"

the book is haunting & beautiful.... the movie is a piece of sh*t. And i always have to wonder when i see a movie which is so poorly interpretative both through the language and through the choice of actors, whether the people making the film even bothered to read the novel. I mean, Pierce Brosnan.....WTF?

I find Pierce Brosnan attractive... what was wrong him as the author in your opinion?

he's too damned old, for one.... and he had all the warmth of a cantaloup. He seemed so disconnected from the dialogue and from the character.

Mike's grief at losing Jo is so raw that he even loses his will and ability to write.... he's an injured, beautiful, haunted character and yet Brosnan (who i've always liked) pulled nothing from the role. A turnip could have done a better job.

I'm late to the party, but did you wind up watching the movie after all since it was starting so soon?

To be honest - and I do confess, now that I'm getting older, my memory isn't as sharp as it was - but I'd practically forgotten that there was a "Bag of Bones" movie, AND that I'd watched it! But, honestly, I think that has more to do with the movie than my memory! It was just lukewarm to my recollection.

No I didn't watch the movie and I am soooo glad because I am listening to Mr. King read it to me on audio (I'm a constant listener) and it is beautiful--really enjoying this one. You can tell Mike Noonan really loved his wife because of the details of his descriptions of her. May we all be so remembered by those who love us.

You know you just gotta temper expectations. The move was decent. Mattie Devore and Sara Tidwell were cast very well and yes Pierce Brosnan was way too old to play Noonan.

In all cases, I've tussled with which is better, to see the movie or read the book first. In the end, I choose the latter because while I will no doubt find the movie disappointing, I'd rather enjoy the book without any preconceptions.

The book is better than the movie.
This is my favorite book of all time. I didn't know SK narrated this one. Never listened to an audio before, but have purchased SK audios for a friend. This is one I DEFINITELY have to buy and listen to! :)

listened to the audio. I love any audio where Stephen reads his own work. Because then we know EXACTLY how he wanted it to sound. The emphasis on things, the inflections -- love it.
