Ok all you smart people. I need some help.

I received an email from our internet provider yesterday that said malicious traffic was originating from our acct, most likely an email or from running an open HTTP or SOCKS proxy.

I have absolutely no idea what that means.

I spent an hour on a chat with internet provider yesterday only to have them tell me to follow the directions in the email. (I thought the email was a scam so contacted them directly, did not click on anything in the email.) There are no directions, just links about proxies, which read like Greek to me. Oh it did say to scan computers and devices....I did that. Everything showed clean.

So then I called cell provider and they helped me make sure all devices were up to date. They all were. So she said call internet provider back and change your wifi password.

From what I am gathering we do not have an actual virus or anything but vulnerability to that Krack flaw...all our devices are android based. No working computer in the house right now, just our phones and tablets. But apparently someone has accessed our wifi. Have to be physically close to do it.

I just got the email again from internet provider. But with same info, so I think they just "resent" it.

What do I do? Scans are clean, changed wifi password...if I don't figure this out, they say they are terminating our service.

Help??

I don't know who your internet provider is, but is it possible that whoever you were chatting with is the one who is scamming you? I may be way off in left field but there are so many people out there pretending to be someone else in order to get money out of you...

Sorry - wish I could be of more help!
Hope you get this fixed ASAP - good luck :eek-new:

That is why I went directly to provider website, and also the 2nd time, I called and the person I talked to could see my chat from earlier.

I did not click on any links in the email. But they told me it was a real email when I spoke to them.

So they are going to terminate your service for something you cannot find? Sounds weird - will they then restart you on a new account :umm:

I called the internet provider again. Apparently it was a mistake that the email notification was sent to me again. Told me I had done what I needed to do by making sure all devices were up to date and clean of any viruses, and by changing wifi password.

I am still really uneasy though, so any advice is appreciated.

If they knew I needed to change my wifi password why didn't the email say that? It would have saved me a lot of headache yesterday....plus doesn't that kind of indicate the security flaw is with their modems?? Since all of our devices were up to date and clean?

:hammer:

Tell them that

Maybe time to change your internet provider?

Perhaps you could milk this for a free month of service!

;;D:congratulatory::m_bigwink:JK

Glad to hear they just screwed up by sending the email twice.

“Real” email doesn’t necessarily mean it’s legit Neesy. Your IP provider is just that, they’re not going to make a call on whether or not to open an email, at least they shouldn’t, because of liability. More than likely it’s a spam email and I’d just delete it completely. If you want to know if there is anything coming from you IP ask friend or relatives that you send emails to if they are receiving any spam type emails from your email account. If they’re not, you’re probably fine.
