Why was he banned?

He was booked on SNL and they wanted him to play the song "Less Than Zero". Elvis didn't want to play it because (allegedly) he felt that a song about British politics wouldn't really engage an America audience, so he suggested a few other songs but they were shot down and he was told in no uncertain terms to play "Less Than Zero". He and The Attractions duly took to the stage live on TV and played the first few bars of "Less Than Zero", before Elvis waved his arms and yelled "Stop! Stop!" then said to the audience "I'm sorry ladies and gentlemen, but there's just no reason to do this song here", then launched into this frenetic, angry version of the song "Radio Radio" which coincidentally (or maybe not) is about artists, specifically punk artists being censored from TV and radio and not getting their voice heard. Allegedly the producer of the segment was so incensed he spent the entire performance just off camera in front of Elvis with his middle finger extended!

There's not a video of it on YouTube but the whole thing is here. (link is safe)

He was banned from SNL for almost 30 years before cheekily recreating the incident with The Beastie Boys in 1999 (YouTube).
